My female rex hair gave birth today. I had bred her to a PEW and was looking forward to the babies, as I have a few people wanting them for pets. So she took a little longer than I expected, I was waiting early in the week for her to give birth. So all this waiting, finally she had them. A big, whopping............

4 babies................ lol

Hehe congrats, will you be keeping back any or sending them all out as pets?

Not sure yet.............I guess we'll see with how many people "follow through" with wanting rats.......lol. Probably keep one for me, let the other three go. I don't want to take any as feeders since she only had the 4. I don't have anything to feed right now anyway............

actually if you send them out as pets it is best to send them out in same sex pairs only ;) speaking only in pet terms.

LOL. I've had one or two small litters like that too. Was this her first litter? She may have more next time around. What color is the Rex?

No this was her second litter.........her first, she had 15. She is a hooded, but not a true hooded as the line down her back is broken.............she is white with a carmel coloured hood.

She's called a mismarked hood ;) (I belive, i could be wrong). I would say breed her a few more times, with the same male. If she keeps having low births it could be because she is to old or has poor genitcs or a number of things. It's up to you to keep breeding if she still has low numbers.

Hmmm...that's interesting. I had a rat that had 13 in her first litter, then only 2 in the second. After that her litters were all small - 4-6 and she was a really nervy mother. She cannibalized her last litter after I cleaned out the cage, so I decided that was the end of using her as a breeder. All of my other rats have had litters consistently in the 12-15 range, and have all been great mothers, so Sapphire might be right that it is a genetic thing.

The agouti I don't know, she is more blonde than the agouti I have. The chocolate definately not, once you see her live......I mean the pic isn't the greatest. Her hair on her head is like brown on the tips but blonde near the root...........strange...
