My one rat recently had her second litter, today while cleaning the cage, we counted 19 babies. Her first litter produced 10 babies. Is this an above average litter?

From what I have seen, its not above average for a rat to have one or two litters this size, but I don't think it happens all the time. She will probably go back to having smaller litters next time.
I dunno, just what I've seen and read.............congrats though....:D
Congrats, i always love when the rats have a litter! one of mine had a litter yesterday, i havent done a count yet, but seeing as its her first litter i have a feeling it 'might' be small.
But anyways congrats
One of my rats had 18 in her first litter, but since then her litters have been around the 12-15 mark.

Thank you for your comments. The only problem I have, is I want to keep all the babies as pets. They just disappear one by one. My husband (greenman) lets me keep one from every second litter (so far).

She is crazy if she thinks she's keeping one from every 2nd litter. LOL they would take over the house in no time, and I would be on the curb :D

LOL. My hobby started out being snakes. At first I was buying food for them but as the number of snakes I had increased, I decided that growing my own food would be more economical. Now I am a confirmed rat & mouse lover, and my original 2 cages of rodents (one of mice and one of rats) has grown to 7 cages (2 rats, 5 mice), some of which are purely pets!
