lately ive been noticing that many people are using rubbermades for their snakes instead of aqauriums. i got to thinking about it and it seems like a pretty good idea to me except for two things.

How do you heat a rubbermade?

How do you provide ligh in a rubbermade? (meaning how do you keep it from being dark 24/7)

sry if this is a stupid question.

1. Heat: UTH's are usually the best option, but a few people might use heat tape or other things. I personally use UTH's.

2. Light: Not a lot of snakes need heat lamps. They're usually pretty unecessary, so lighting a Rubbermaid isn't really a concern.

Clear/opaque Rubbermaids allow a bit of natural light in, so your snake isn't in the dark 24/7 if that is a concern.

I use a human heatpad for my snake and it seems to heat the rubbermaid quite well. There are a lot of clear rubbermaid containers out there so I wouldn't worry about lighting (like Heather said). Just make sure you have a proper temperature gradient in place - with two thermometers on either end.
Peace,
Derek

ok so would that be like one of those reptile heat pads i guess?

and is that all you would need? like no heat lamp or anything?

also is there a way to keep a snake in a solid colored rubbermade? thats why i asked about the light.

It would really depend on the species in question...

I like to see my snakes, so they're in opaque Rubbermaids. I don't see anything really wrong in keeping a snake such as a ball python in a solidly coloured Rubbermaid, as they spend a lot of time underground and in burrows...

Same with lights (depends on the species). Usually unecessary for most snakes, such as boids. I don't know anything about colubrid setups though, maybe someone else can answer that for you.

What are you looking to house? It would allow for more precise answers.

i was planning on housing a few bci. i dont really know how big they make rubbermades but i wasnt planning on housing an adult bci in one. i was thinking more along the lines of babies. i have one bci now and once i get it sexed i hope to get another one this summer and breed them when theyre old enough.
