there's a more in-depth article on the same research on the National Geographics' web page as well:

that was a really cool read, thanks for the links

no problem... I had a Ball Python once (was sold as adult female het-albino, died before she was bred)... after vets did the necropsy (post mortum, autopsy whatever it is called) they found that she died of a heart attack.. she had just eaten a good sized meal (she didn't eat very well, so I had piggy-backed a second rat)...
her heart condition was caused by a bacterial infection in the blood stream... it makes sense why she couldn't handle large meals... she would always eat smaller meals (quite small for her size actually) and I didn't understand why... vet thought she was ok.. I should of done blood work on her, anti-biotics is all she needed :(
Anyways, after reading on this latest research, it makes sense why her heart couldn't handle the large meal and it stopped... a good strong heart appears to be particularly important for pythons compared to other types of animals...

I was sick with a blood infection last year. It wasn't too much fun considering I was in the hospital for Christmas and New Year's. Being a diabetic, I don't have the best healing rate and was stuck in the hospital for a little under a month and then on "home-antibiotics" for 2 weeks after. Thank God that the infection hadn't damaged/effected my heart.
