It has been a long time since i've heard anything about bateaters. Is the craze gone, already?!?

Is anyone making those, these days?

what info is there on them? Since it has been a few years since they first saw the light of day, there should be more information now.
What's their growth potential? Like the parents? What is the biggest or oldest specimen currently out there?

Do they come healthy?
Do they have any problems?

I could ask many questions, but i don't even know anyone who has a Bateater. I guess the craze is fading away. Too bad.

I don't think it ever really caught on in the first place. But I'm with you, I'd really like to see some adult pics etc...

check out other large snake forums. The crazy is still there but many people gave up hope ever producing anything more then slugs. But as I said, there are still some peopel out there trying to get them. Bob clark has them in his forsale section on his site. (I believe he bought the first bateater from some guy in teh 80's for 60G's !!!!!!) as well as burm X retic X burms and burm X retic X retics.

Now this is something thatw as told to me at a show, that both animals need to be from the same wild locality. and I think ?malasia? is the only place this occures, (I could be wrong and more then likely am).

I'll upload some pics I swiped from various sites showing some simi large bateaters that I believe were taken in late 03 early 04. (they were archived).

Iv read good things about nerd in inquiring about your questions so you might want to look there. There was also a thread here not long ago (within a year) ons oemthing posting there burm and retic in the act. depending on how lng ago thatw as they should be hatching/hatched already.

other good sites for this question woudl be bob clarks forums, the forums at nerd and teh forums at constrictors unlimited. K-ingsnake would also be a good place but there forums have been lacking of amussing content lately.

That last pic is burm x rock?
I could guess bateater x rock, maybe. The head gives "retic" away, for sure.

It's just a Bateater. The pic has been on Constrictors forums, which I frequent. For the life of me I can't remember who's they are, but it is a Bateater straight up. He has a pair that are very similar.

Bateaters are extremely variable in appearence. The demand for Bateater hasn't lessened at all, they are just extremely hard to produce. Just because Bob Clark lists them on his site, dosen't mean he has them all the time.

I figure I'll give it a shot producing them. I know the chances are slim but what the hell? I've got a normal female, and since I have not interest in producing non-local normal Retics, why not try? I have toyed with idea of a Retic/Afrock cross too. What a monster that would be.

We actually tried to make some last year with our albino patternless male burmese and our big tiger retic female. They mated, and it looked like she ovulated - but I think she reabsorbed the follicles.

At the time, Bob Clark said that there were 3 people trying that particular cross - and we were the last of the 3 to admit we failed.

I don't care about anyone's opinions on them, if we got 1 or 2, I'd keep them - I love them - and want to make my own. I was just talking to a friend about a rumour that I heard about a big one that is like 3 years old, and 27 feet long. The person who told me this assumed they were going to keep it till it made it past the 30' mark - and then post pictures and possibly sell it. Could be just a rumour - but I've heard some are suspected to be able to get longer than a retic and as thick as a burm because of hybrid vigor. Likewise, some may not be thrifty at all - but look at Ligers and Tions - they do get bigger than each parent - might be someting to it, I want to find out for myself.

And i want to F2 albino patternless x tiger babies - just so I know what happens!

They're practically my favourite animal. They're bred for their skills and magic.

that actualy has nothing to do with hyrbids in snakes. I realy dont wnat to look for the link but there is a site all about hybrid big cats and they explain why a liger is bigger then a tigon.

To my knowledge, Dr. Jay Owens has been trying to settle it one way or the other around weither or not the gentic are transferable with the Bateaters. It is however unlikely that recessive genes would be compatable when crossing species but stranger things have happened. Like has been said, it's a hard cross to acheive. I'm hoping Kara and her fellow NERDS manage to produce some this year. I'd love to add some Bateaters.

I'm glad i started this thread. I'm reading great stuff.

Ryan, where did that rumour started? Based on what? Is there any way to check if it's true? What a snake that must be (if for real). I heard that hybrids get bigger than both parents but usually only the first generation...

But if that snake is so big at 3 years old, why aren't there more like that? All bateaters i've seen are only mid sized and quite older than that. Could be bs, Ryan.

Anyway. If you know anything more on that, post please.

Jimmy, I agree - it could very well be B.S - I'll check with where I heard that, to see if there is any more info. I'll beleive it when I see it, if there is any substance to the rumour, I would expect to see more about it soon. Could be a big fish story.....
