plexi and silicone

2 quick questions...

1) Is there anywhere cheaper than Rona or Home Depot to pick up plexi glass? I am in Ottawa.

2) The "100%" silicone in the caulking tubes at Rona says its not aquarium safe, can you use it in a terrarium (ie. not submerged in water). Where do you get your silicone and what kind?

Any silicon that I have to use for my reptiles is DAP Aquarium Sealant. Sold at Home Depot. It's the same sealant as what glass aquariums are made with, perfectly safe. Just let the silicaon cure for at least 48 hours away from the reptiles because of the fumes it lets off.

as for plexi.. even though i dont suggest it you may either want to try a glass company, a plastic company, or some home sucurity places.. like the ones that come and put bars and lexan in windows... thats kind of stuff..

sealent.. an aquarium service will have it if you cant find it elsewhere.. big alls is the one i know of..

but why is it that you want to use plexi.. why not just use 6mm (1/4") glass.. it wont scratch as easily and unless like your herp throws a rock at it it wont break..

Well, 2 reasons.

1st i thought plexi was cheaper, but am quickly learning this may not be the case.

2nd i can drill through plexi to attach it. I am not sure how i would securely attach glass to these "windows" in the cage. I was told about these clips that you screw in to the wood and they hold the glass in place from the inside. Do you have any experience with these, i'd like to know how secure they are and perhaps see some pictures.

The cage is already built and i am just fixing it up. Plexiglass is what was there originally but it was all foggy and cracked, and needed to be replaced.

This cage is very different from the standard 4x2x2 melamine box, where the sliding glass would be ideal. This is a 6' high corner unit that has 3 faces at the front (giving it the look of half a hexagon that fits into the corner). It can be one 6' cage with a landing in the middle, or you can put in the divider and it will become two 3' cages. The centre face of both the top and bottom are hinged and open up like doors. Hopefully that paints a reasonable picture of what i am working on.

I will post pictures when it is completed or near complete anyways.

p.s: where did you buy those air vents, and how are they held in place?

I'm curious to see the finished product. Got the vents (3") at Home Depot held with non toxic glue.

you can get plexi or any other kind pf plastic from CANUS PLASTICS
on lisgar down town just off bank, i just picked up a bunch of plexi
for the doors of my enclosuers i just built 3/16 thick sheet is about 4.15 a square foot but you can get any size
