Hey everyone, I hope you are all doing well. I posted this topic in regards to herp names. Do many of you actually take the time to name your herps? I have been trying to name my one large iguana for a few weeks now, though have not had much luck. What do you look for when naming herps? :)

I name mine. Even ones that I am not "close" with, for me it makes record keeping more simple and makes caring for them easier. It's alot easier for me to tell my boyfriend to feed "Susie" rather than say something like "Could you please feed F04AH05"

lol :D It DOES get harder though. I am running out of names entirely. Mostly now I just look to books and movies or TV shows I like.

mine are named too - for the same reason as marisa - although hey do have numbers too. I just name them the first thing that comes too mind. - but then you end up with names like - lola, squiggle, sizzel, ericka, and slippy - lol

Sometimes naming a pet for me happens before or right when I get the animal. Other times it takes a little while longer and I have to look at the animal's characterisitcs to think of a name.

Nearly all mine have name. The inspiration came mostly from appearance and behavior, but many other thing can affect my choice. For exemple, I buyed a ball python who passed all is time in is water dish, I name it Nemo because of the movie who was playing at the time. I am still searching for 4 of my 32 small beasts.

My rainbows' names are totally random, they kind of rhyme, like Ophelia and Cecilia...

The rest it's just what I feel like, or how they act. For example my mom named my male cham Larry (Larry Lounge Lizard) and I named my female Priscilla because she acts like such a princess...

Mine are all pets, they usually get names...

Mine get names, I usually look in my favourite books. Some I name for personality, like my Amazon that I named Majesty because she was so prissy.

mine all have names. there are a few themes going, like names from greek mythology (e.g. aesclepius) cuz im a buff, and names in the language of the country the animal comes from (jiri and svetlana the bulgarian rats). then there's your typical names based on appearence, like diamond the snow corn. and the obvious, like frogger, slither and ms. snake. but sometimes its just random, or what "feels" right. also, i dont change an animal's name if it already had one from a previous owner.

It's been 9 months and I'm still having a hard time naming my Savvy... I came up with Raven, but, I also like Sin, Enlil, Anu and a few others. I'm still not sure.

I don't know what I'll do when I need a name for a baby!!!

All my pets have names but I never call them by their names... My roomate doesn't even know the cat's name after 5 months, although, surprisingly, the cat knows her own name. XD

Usually they're called something along the lines of 'brown mouse', 'white mouse', 'blue fishy' and 'cat' XD

None of my snakes have names. They wouldn't come if I called them anyway... I think I might have tried to name a snake years ago, but it just never stuck for me. Whenever I take a snake to the vet and they ask for the pet name, I just put "snake". The receptionist asked me one day why all my snakes had the same name... Maybe I'm weird, but I feel naming something is so possessive. I just know what they are and that's enough for me.
The cats, they got names, but usually I just refer to them as boy cat and girl cat. They know who I'm talking about usually by my tone of voice.

I usually go for a foreign language in naming my herps, I just go for something that I think sounds cool and suits them. Like my python Dimitri. :)

RIKKI:

I name all my pets and the collection, I feel it gets to to see each as an individual and more connected to each. My sound corny but each animal I care for actually does get individual time, care, and respect.

I name all my animals from old culture and mythical legends and Gods.

Egyptian
Roman
Norse
Greek
Incan
Mayan
Chinese

Are just some I look up in google, I just type in Roman Gods, get a list read the details and see which animals best deserves that name.

For the most part, we tend to get our animals from people who no longer can keep them, so they're generally already named. Our male iguana was named "Acid" by the previous owner, but we changed it to "Sid"......close to the original, but not as dumb.

Everone has a name though. Just picked up a baby beardie today at the show, named it "Quizzno" because thats where we went to eat after the show.

my leos are Mad Max cause she is physcotic and tiny tim cause she is smaller than max.. and yes i know there boys names but i like them..

my veiled is Loghan or Logan or something.... i only pick out a name i dont spell it. but he usually get called Mr. Pissy Face..

my cent. amer. banded gecko is Gilbert, my g-friend's frient named it.. i dont know why but it kind of suits him.

Some of ours are named, others aren't.. we've tried naming a lot of them, but sometime the names just don't take.

one is officially named "Kara's Neighbour" because she sits next to Kara on the shelf. My male Sav is named Fluffy, but the female is just refered to as "the female sav". Others are named after temperment. I've got a "fire", "grumpy", "squish", and "stinky". The ones that had names when we got them kept the names. I'd say 1/2 of ours are named and the other half aren't.

I also agree with chas*e, there are a few that occasionally get called something with a profanity or two thrown in.

I name all my animals also. I still remember my first pair of leopard geckos. I named them "Shagme" and "Shagwell" because that's what I wanted them to do!

All my pets are named. I name my reptiles just because I like to. My dog and cats have names because they are intelligent and social animals that respond to their names. And because they are important to me...my fur babies.

I too name all my pets - herps and otherwise. Can't say they're real original though - my redfoot tortoise is Red, and my tarantula is Spidey, and I had a cat named Mouse...sad...but we used to have piles of critters, and picking names gets hard...I usually use one of the baby name websites now...I like the ones where you can enter a meaning and it gives you a list of names from around the world that have that meaning...works for me 'cause I'm just not creative. For example, my newest cat is orange...and got the name Flynn off a website 'cause it means orange haired one...

I name most of mine from games I play:

Cenarius is my male veiled chameleon, Cenarius is the demi-god of the forest in Warcraft.

Quel'Thalas is my snake, a region of undead territory in Warcraft.

Elune is one of my blizzard leopard geckos, the goddess of the moon for the Night Elves. etc etc.

I name all my animals. It takes me some time. I really like to get to know them first - I'm kinda fussy about picking something that fits. I also agree with Marisa, it's a lot easier to tell somebody to feed 'Horatio', than to be quoting #'s.

I get my names from books, movies, t.v. and my son helps with some - he's really into Lord of the Rings and Warcraft etc., so knows a lot of the greek mythological names etc. - he's recently named a blood male dragon Imotep the Pharoah.

Only a few of my reptiles are named and when they are named it's because of certian traits they possess. We have Spaz, Mr. Snow, Lumpy, and Tuna (she only ate when her pinkies were scented with tuna juice), and Stumpy (the 3 legged bearded dragon). The rest just have numbers. When i talk to my bf about any particular snake we usually just refer to them my morph, size and sex.

I use to name all of the pets. But after the numbers large, I couldn't remember my kids names on good days....going through a roll call before getting their names right became menotonous. I do name the cats, dogs, birds, rabbits and such what......but there is no way I could keep up with the herps. There are a few favorites mind you, the 17 torts for example, that all have names. But to name 250+ geckos and 150+ snakes......ummmm... NO. lol
