i have been offered an unproven adult pair of black throat monitors. the yare asking 500 for the pair and they have been cooled and just recently brought out and warmed up... the female is 3 years old and the male is 2. my questoin is , is this a good deal and is there a market for cb babies and what would they sell for roughly.

That they just came out of being cooled tells me that this person knows nothing about them, and is most probably why they also call them an unproven pair, heck it might be 2 males or 2 females for all they know.
Theres a market for CBB BTs, at $250-$300 each with proof of them being CBB you could sell them easily. They are probably 0.0.2 fresh imports. Just watch what you spend on them and check to make sure they are worth what your willing to spend, that and you will be able to house 2 enormous monitors properly, especially if they dont get along.
All of those adds and those tables at reptile shows the people always say the same thing about snakes etc, they just came out of being cooled.
Good luck.

well, i know i would pay for a captive bred blackthroat, id jump at the oppurtunity. now in your case, can you supply them with huge enclosures??feed them right(i hear thats really expensive)
and what shvar said, there not even proven....your choice though there is a market for them. thats my 2 cents though.

i noticed that your in canada, a good price for captive bred ones would be 300-400 maybe even 450? thats in canadian dollars though.I havent been able to find ny body working with these species either in canada.ive been searching for years now too.
the only place ive found that carrys them is w/c specimens from port credit pet center, unless mirdo inportations get them now and again. ide say...doit, if you got the room and cash.

perhaps i used the wrong word when i said cooled! would cycled be a better word?

500 is insane. And possibly, like SHvar said, they may not even be a pair.

Cycled would indicate that the female is ready to breed, and that would be difficult to even notice with an untrained eye. Cycling time's vary also. if someone is telling you this, chances are they're just trying hard to sell them.

BT's are alot of fun, and addicting, I own 4 of them and love them but 500 dollars for a pair is alot of money, espeacially with so many questions up in the air -- health, proof of sex, age?, previous diet? conditions kept in???? lots of these matter, believe it or not.. Be very careful :)

Then I doubt they would know how to recognize it. If they told you they were just cycled, Id laugh in their faces, they dont know what they are talking about, they just want you to think they do. Yes they can brumate, yes in the wild it happens, but brumation is a survival technique to allow many to survive on little resources, whether its too dry, too cold, too hot, lack of food, or whatever, its no indiation of them going to breed or even capable of doing so if they are a pair. Healthy females cycle and produce eggs, they do so on a regular basis whether its every 3 weeks for a healthy female ackie to every 6 months for a healthy female albig.
Id ask them a few good educated questions and find out what their agenda really is or if you can get them a bit less if your really interested.

If you like them and can take care of them get them and you won't be disappointed. Breeding is a bonus. If you want them just to breed them then maybe you should get something else.

boyswithscales:

I've acquired my BT's over the past 5 years or so. I still have my original 2 which ive raised from tiny little guys up to the beasts they are now. I've got them from reptile shows, in trades..... friends etc. I'll try and get a digital camera to put up photos.. Unfortunatly my digicam broke about a year ago and i havent replaced it :)

$500 for an unknown unseen pair of albigs is a little steep.
I paid $75 for my male and if I had a place to put it I would have bought a female about the same size as my male at the last show for $150.

i think i might offer this person 350 and try to get the cage thrown in.... i also am trying to work out a deal to get 1.2 red tailed ratsnakes shipped inn from the states :) so there is no longer much extra cash
