Cool pics. I just managed to get another Tiger today :D looks about the same size as yours. I'll be posting pics soon of both, so you can get an idea of how big of a honker Laguna is. Time to think of a cool name for Tiger #2 :)
Talk about luck tho. I was at the place I am getting my new terrarium built and was talking to the girl about how its for my Tiger and she said she had one that she wanted to get rid of, so I took it off her hands and got her Faunarium, water dish and small piece of cork bark for free with him :) Score!!! I think mine is a male, and the new Tiger looks to be a female.

LOL well if you look under "my gecko pics" on my website, you can see Laguna, my male Tiger, and beside him Lily, the new salamander. I'm pretty sure that its a she, I looked at the tail and its basically flat, no swelling. I am going to check again peroidically. Oh and I swear that Lily ate like 20+ crickets and 2 waxworms at least the first night I got her, that's why she looks so fat like Laguna. She's 8", so this will give you an idea of how much bigger Laguna is than Lily LOL!!
I think I will give my two Tigers a semi-fasting period, where I will only feed them a few crickets (5 or 6) every four days, just to let them lose a little weight and not be so fat LOL! I'll post some pics of their tank soon, but I am making alot of additions right now to the tank over the next few days, so I will wait till I get some of the stuff added before I put a pic under "my tanks" section of my site. Give it a few days.
I hope they get back to me on my tank estimate, so I can transfer them to the new tank soon. :D A 48"x24"x15" custom.

LOL oh and mine don't lunge at me, Laguna actually lets me dig substrate less than 1cm beside his toes and he just watches. I guess he know if I want him to move when I touch his tip of his tail a little and he will move a little. Lily is already getting settled in quite nicely too.
Awesome! I may get one soon, very nice!

Hey Samurai, I have a pic posted in my website of my Tigers tank, even tho its a temp till I get my 75 gal custom. I'm starting to buy/make parts and pieces for the new tank already :)

02-20-05, 09:03 PM
Oh and I bought a fogger, but it will have to wait for the new tank, the water dish is too shallow in the 27 gal long, but it will be very sweet once I get it all setup.

Thats a pretty cool salamander, how much do they sell for?
Chris
heheh - my moms pool get full of them every year - I had no idea these things were pets - LOL
I can`t imagine what anyone would pay for one? I guess its probably better to pay than to steal from mother nature though!

I dont really remember, it was either 20 or 40 its pretty active and eats soo well. They are pretty interesting id like to know if its a male of a female so i can get a mate for 'it'

my tiger is in pretty loose deep substrate, so hes burried lots of the time. He prowls around when hes hungry tho. I was thinking of getting some toads but i think ill stick with the reptiles from now on.
TLH_Wär§cöötmän
02-24-05, 07:39 PM
LOL well I watched them very close for about 3 hours and they got along good, each one has picked its "burrow" now, so I'm not worried.
I got my Tigers as rescued amphibians, so I have no idea how you would get them. My larger 11" Tiger (Laguna) I got from a friend who found him on a construction site with a broken leg and was all dried out and about to die. The smaller 8" Tiger (Lily) I got from a girl at an aquarium shop that had a lady give it to her when all the floods happened in Edmonton. The lady fouind it in her basement and brought it to the shop. The girl just didn't want it anymore so I took it. Got the Faunarium for free that Lily was in, so I have put it with my other Faunarium for free as a bonus. As you can see by the link I am providing below, they are both very healthy now.
If you can't find my Tigers Samurai, here's the link:
http://www.freewebs.com/albertabredgeckos/mygeckopics.htm#38074071
As you can see they are both absolute pigs LOL I've slowed their food supply a little for this time of the year.
I've started working on my lagoon for the new tank. I'm using styrofoam and cutting it to shape, then coated it with aquarium silicone and then poured some exo-terra sand on it and dumped off excess. Looks like it should work, but I have to wait at least 2 or 3 days for the top layer to dry and then I can test it and see if it will be water proof. Then I have to coat each side and bottom with the silicon to seal the entire foam off. I made a hole for the fogger I bought too, so I can't wait to get it all finished and give it a try. I bought a few long grass-like silk plants for the tank also. Now if they would get on building my tank I would be fine LOL

They are both beasts, IMO i would watch their weight because obesity is a big problem with them because they will eat and eat and eat. Yours are looking a little chubby you might be cutting their lifespan down with the extra weight. I know how hard it is to stop feeding them when they always seem like they are hungry. just a thought, otherwise they look great. post pics when you get their display set up sounds like its going to be amazing

02-24-05, 08:51 PM
LOL yea I know thats why they are on a diet right now LOL The new tank will give them lots to roam around in, so it should be good..I think I am going to call and harass the tank guys about my tank after I finish this post LOL Funny thing is I rarely give them waxworms or anything. mostly crickets. Which reminds me I want to get them some worms of some kind as a treat instead of crickets this week.
I'll post a few pics of the lagoon as soon as its done. and one of it with fogger on too :) the fogger is so cool LOL but you need at least a 2" deep water dish/bowl. I might setup the fogger in a container with screen ontop till I get the new tank.

that will look awesome post a pic for sure, im just feeding my guy a goldfish right now. he should be happy

Haha laguna is so funny, he came out of his hide a little to see what I was doing infront of him when I was putting in the fogger container and stuff LOL Instantly from 60% humidity to 100% LOL I think they will like it!
samurai
02-24-05, 09:44 PM
its soo cool, will you leave it on all the time or only somtimes? how much did it cost, how big is that tank. its a really cool setup. some awesome looking plants and hides, much nicer than what i have mine in. how big is that tank
TLH_Wär§cöötmän
02-24-05, 09:59 PM
its a 36x12x15 Hagen for $80, but I bet you could get a cheaper one made with slightly thinner glass for a salamander. I wouldn't leave that fogger on more than 5 minutes every few hours from the looks of it. I got the fogger for half price, $25 instead of $50. I got the "grass" plants at Michaels (a crafts store) for a steep $5 each, but they are nice. I'm going to get a few more for the big tank later. The cork bark pieces cost me a bit tho, about $10 a piece and I have 4 pieces. The linoleum on black sheets of paper mounted to the outer back side add a nice look, and cost me $4.50 (!!) The linoleum cost me $0.63 each with GST and the black paper backing cost me $0.95 each with GST. I have about 9 EXO-TERRA Plastic Plants PT-3000 Croton Small that cost me $3.00 each with GST. I'm not putting the croton plants in the new tank I don't think, but they do make a nice addition. A few well placed cheap silk/plastic plants can make a big difference.
Hope it gives you some ideas Samurai! :D
Oh the tank was roughly $200 to setup like that.
TLH_Wär§cöötmän
02-24-05, 10:06 PM
Oh btw, that fogger almost emptied a 500 mL container full of water in about 5-10 minutes, so you have to watch the amount of time you leave it on or you can burn out the foggers motor, not a cheap thing to do (it's wrecked if you do and that's $50 down the drain)
I think it's safest to leave it on for about 2-3 minutes, that adds tons of moisture to the terrarium and doesn't get close to draining the water much. But after 2-3 minutes theres about 4-5" of fog in the tank!! hahahaa
samurai
02-24-05, 10:13 PM
do you use the fogger for any of your geckos, i dont know anything about them if they need high humidity or anything. but it seems to put a sure lot of water into the air my guy would love a setup like that i think i need to remodel his home. hed be pretty jealous if he got a glimpse of that. good work
TLH_Wär§cöötmän
02-24-05, 10:20 PM
LOL THX, My leopard geckos and Tokays do not need the humidity, but my Chinese Cave Geckos will, so I am going to setup a fogger container in their tank also and just swap the fogger between tanks as needed. (takes 2 seconds :) )
If you bought the tank, setup 2 cork bark pieces and the forrest bedding with a water dish for the Tiger to soak in you could probably do it for about $120-$130, then buy stuff as you can. The tank is great for 1 Tiger. Then hunt for deals like I did with the fogger and plants :)
samurai
02-24-05, 10:28 PM
ya when i move out in like 2 years ill expand my collection a lot, so i may as well start searching for deals now by then ill have the materials fora few nice setups. i just measeard my tiger hes 17.5cm so whatever that is in inches. id like to get a mate and try to breed them i havent really heard of anyone doing this i dont know how many people have them.
TLH_Wär§cöötmän
02-24-05, 10:32 PM
Thats about 7". Mine are around 20cm (8") and 27/28cm (11") LOL so I need the tank space and multiple hides :) They are not a very common pet at all from what I know, and figuring out if you have M/F is even tougher (I'm still not 100% sure on mine LOL might check with a vet, maybe they could tell??)
Like I said, Laguna is a streroidal monster IMO!!
samurai
02-24-05, 10:37 PM
I havent really researched them at all maybe ill do that soon try to figure otu if i have a m/f maybe i could get a breeding pair going, then trade off some babies for geckos, talk about planning ahead eh i dont even know if they will breed in captivity.
TLH_Wär§cöötmän
02-24-05, 10:40 PM
I don't think I have ever read anyone being able to, but you need to lower temps of tanks for sure and simulating rains would be important too (now theres a challenge!!)
samurai
02-24-05, 10:44 PM
hahaha ya, a coule years ago i bred my blue gouramis (fish) and they breed after the rainy season i was reading some people go as far as playing those thunderstorm tapes to simulate the rainyseason i thought that was going a little far, im sure i would have to cool the salamanders, i asume they breed in the sprink like frogs ????

LOL I hope my spelling is decent, just went to the local pool hall and had lots o chicken winds & beer haha man I think I have hit delete already 20 times just writing this small paragraph!! LOL
Well it is a major undertaking breed Tigers. You will need several tank setups, none of which will be cheap to setup properly to breed/get them breeding.
If you look here:
http://www.livingunderworld.org/caudata/database/ambystomatidae/ambystoma/mavortium/index.shtml
(I hope the moderators do not mind, but its better than copying the whole thing and infringing copyrights in my mind)
You can see that setting up tanks for breeding adults, Larva, Subadults and adults is no light undertaking.
March to June was breeding season according to this page, but it may vary if you read furthur. This site gives you a good idea of how much work breeding can be, but the rewards are awesome, I mean breeding my Tigers would rule!! but would take a lot of effort and digilance plus different tank setups to provide the right conditions.
I am thinking of looking at it, but there are several reasons why I am not going to try. PM me if you want to know samurai. BTW where are you located?? (where do you live LOL I shouldn't post when beer is in me haha :D )
samurai

Your lucky to have beer in you, Nothing like starting a major assignment at 230 in the morning the night before its due, its gonna be a long night. Im in ontario quite a ways from you. looks like breeding my salamander is out of the question for a while...
TLH_Wär§cöötmän
02-25-05, 02:10 AM
haha man I thought I was the only one up at this time half corked :)
like I said its quite the undertaking. I.E. why I think not too many people would ever really try.
samurai
02-25-05, 02:15 AM
ya i dont think salmanders will be the first herp i breed, maybe after some practice with reps, anyways this should be the last thing on my mind right now, gotta concentrate for the rest of the night(morning). Later Man
