Im thinking of building a rack for some of my animals, and I'm confused as to what size rubbermaid to use for an adult bp?
Here, we only have 'Hammarplast' boxes, and the largest size is only 2 foot 4 in x 1 foot 4 in, and 1 foot 6 in tall...
I'm thinking that's too crammed for an adult ball, what do you think?

Hmm, Sterilite makes one thats 3 foot 6 inches x 19 inches and 7 inches deep. I wouldn't want to go much smaller than that.
I use rubbermiads that measure 23X16X6 for my adults and I have no problems with them. I used to use the "underbed" (34X16X6) and found they were too big, resulting in sporadic eating habits in all who inhabited them.
I use the same ones that mykee uses

I use the same ones as mykee, and had the same problems with the bigger ones.

Thanks for the replies, all! I was thinking the box should be at least as long as the snake, to allow it to stretch out completely...
Interesting..

Shawn, stick with what works for YOU. :) I made some changes because things WEREN'T working. Don't mess with a good thing though. Lots of breeders (very successful ones too) use the long bins. ;)

I was just kidding, although none of my BP's are big enough for anything like that. I BOught them in anticipation and so I could build a permanent Rack for them once the babies are grown. Right now they are in 16"L x 9"W x 6"H, thanks forthe info though.

Hey Mykee,
what's the largest Ball Python you keep in that size tub? I can't imagine stuffing my almost 3000g female in a 23x16x6 tub.. seems rather small to me for that large a female...? I never tried it thought, and this is a question not an observation...
Thanks for your thoughts,
Bristen.
Almost 3000g females, and a 1500g male for breeding. They fit just fine. I swear.

When you say they 'fit' just fine, can they actually move in them?? Not trying to sound like I am disagreeing with you keeping them in there, you are the expert here not me!! I am just thinking ahead for when my ball gets to a large size. I already keep him in a 24"x15"x15" now and he is only just over 2 foot long. So that box should last him all his life then?? Going off topic a little here but what size rubbermaid would you keep a Boa in?? Maybe a 6-7 foot one??

Hmm rubbermaid that big? I dunno if they exist. I made a melamine enclosure for my Boas.
Adam; they move around just fine. Keep in mind they are ball pythons and don't require lots and lots of room. I personally thought that these sized rubbermaids would be too small, but it doesn't matter what I like; I threw them in and within weeks they went from barely eating to eating consistently like champs. That was enough to convince me. I got the idea to use these sized rubbermaids from one of the larger breeders of BP's here in Canada. He mentioned ( and I saw in person) his bp's in them. I gave it a shot and he was right.
Again, as it been said before, if you're comfortable with these rubbermaids, by all means try something else. Remember though, it's all about the snake and making it feel as comfortable as possible so it will eat, breed etc.

Once again I agree with mykee. I used to think that if I gave my BP's this huge enclosure that was all natural looking that they would be alot happier and less stressed, and I always said that I couldn't imagine keeping them in rubbermaids that size. I figured they would be stressed and wouldn't eat if they were in them, but until you have tried both and see the results for yourself, you're not gonna believe it. The difference is unbelievable. Just because you think something is better for the snake, doesn't necessarily mean that it is. It's one of those things you have to see for yourself to believe, I think. It still blows me away how much better they do in rubbermaids. Who woulda thunk it!?! : )

I was not doubting anyone here. I do keep my ball in a rubbermaid. Just a big one for his size. Was just wondering if it was big enough for him when he is fully grown, which it obviously is!!

Oh I know you weren't, I wasn't trying to be condescending whatsover in my last post. It wasn't directed at you or anyone for that matter. I was just trying to share my views and thoughts with everyone. I should have put that in the post. Sorry for any confusion.

most people that dont have them in rack systems use belt buckle type nylon straps. it takes three to do it correctly, two on the narrow way that go all the way around and one on the long way all the way around. it would be easier on you if the buckles were on top. i hope you can understand what i mean. ;)
