pink rats

I have seen some people recommend pinkie mice for breeding females to fatten them up a little. Following the size rule (no bigger then the width of the eyes) would you try day old or younger rats?

I ask because I have lots of breeding rats but not mice.

Just curious, I appreciate your thoughts.
