View Full Version : veiled info needed
This is Albert's temporary space. he will soon be needing bigger. should I place the UVB light vertically or horizontally when i build his new home? I am thinking along the lines of a 3wx2dx5h habitat. has anyone ever tried growing mustard greens or collard greens(or something edible) as a choice for live plants in the cage rather than pothos or other plants? one last question(for now  ) this question is for anyone that has sucessfully raised a healthy vieled....I have read contradicting info about giving calcium D3 to juveniles, should I be dusting all his crickets everyday, or every other day. Or should I be just dusting some of them? I am confused on how often and don't want to overdose. I am using RepCal calcium w/D3. And a I have read that gutloading the crickets properly is better than vitamin supplement, but I would rather hear that from someone that has taken care of a veiled for a lengthy time. He is about 4months old.

From what I can see, he looks good!
Gutloading is definately better. In your case you'll want to be dusting with D3 twice a week, when he's an adult you'll want to just once a week, dusting all the crickets. Some people use more, some less, with a UVB bulb this way works just as well. I usually mount mine over top of the enclosure, I've tried a 5 foot vertical once and it just made it hard to look at the cage because the light was shining at you.
The cage dimensions sound good.
If you get a female, you'll want to be dusting twice as much when she starts producing eggs.

thanks for the compliment Kevin.
And Brock, thanks a bunch for the info. I hadn't thought about the light being bothersome placed vertically but maybe on the side it wouldn't be so bad. I reckon across the top will work since he will spend most his time up high anyway where the rays can reach him. As for getting a female,,,,,,I don't see that happening, it is alot of work just keeping one as a pet and I don't think I want to do any breeding of these guys. still waiting for crested eggs.
