View Full Version : Question about Pastels
This is probably a dumb question, but is a normal pastel and a different kind of pastel like, say, a lemon pastel the same kind of morph? I mean like, could they produce super pastels? Would they be super lemon pastels?
Pastels, unlike ghosts (which are mostly uncompatible), are all compatible and will produce supers (on paper) when bred together.
IMO the "lemon pastel" is a great marketing scheme. To me, they are just another line of pastel, some are brighter and some are not, and just simply not worth the inflated price that people are asking for them.

mykee,
On what do you base your claim that ghosts are mostly incompatible? I've yet to hear a verified report of two proven genetic lines of ghosts not proving compatible but was wondering if you have run across some.
I think it's probable that all the pastels are compatible but it will be hard to tell. Even if there where different loci that make different lines of pastels they still might combine to make what looks like a super. The test would be if that "super" produced only pastels with normals or if it could produce some normals and some more "supers" mixed in. I've not heard much for results of super breedings yet.

I'm with Mykee on the pastels. I've been fortunate enough to produce quite a few and they come out in all kinds of colors. I've got some that look like blondes, lemons, stonewashed etc. They are all Graziani line in my collection.
Randy, I have heard one one verified case of ghost incompatibility. A couple of years back Greg Graziani bred two ghosts together and produced all normal looking hatchlings. I know that one was a NERD orange ghost and the other was a CH import.

Mark,
I wonder if all the cases of ghost incompatibility weren’t like the Graziani ones where at least one of the animals was an unproven import. My suspicion is that not all ghost looking imports are genetic ghosts. Maybe some are caused by some non-genetic condition and hence of course are not compatible with proven genetic lines. I'm still waiting the hear about two proven genetic ghosts proving incompatible.

So a Pastel X Ghost = what?? Sorry I see you talking about compatibility issues but I am not sure why. Thanks for the patience to deal with my "newb" questions.

Shawn,
Pastel X Ghost = 50% Pastel het Ghost and 50% Normal het Ghost
Compatibility issues arise when two animals that look the same do not share the exact same 'mutation' and when bred together do not produce 100% homozygous morph offspring, but rather 100% hets for each of the identical mutations. It is simply coincidental that their separate 'mutations' look the same.
