Trap Stick for Venomous

I finally got around to making a trap stick. Basically, it is a clear box that goes over the snake. Like a trap box on a stick. I opted for 1/4" Acrylic so that it is quite heavy and can sit on its own. It is mounted to a square dowl. Here it is in use with one of my Cottonmouths.

It is great for simple maintenance like changing water. And it is crystal clear so that you can always have an eye on the snake.

That's handy, and quite a bit safer than the clear "push-tool" some people use to change out water.

Well done. I get similar (though not as nice) results simply by placing a clear plastic Sterilite or Rubbermaid tub over a snake in a cage and cleaning up around it.

I've stepped people on the phone through duct taping a plastic bowl to a broom handle to settle over a snake to keep it in place while we dispatched the nearest volunteer to the address. Works great, and the average person can do it quickly in their own kitche, but not as nice as the transparent setup you have.

I don't mind improvising with the Rubbermaids, but your setup with better visibility and a longer handle is safer and better looking. Good going.

Thanks Tanyth. I the first couple I made were deli cups and sterilite. But always have quite a bit of 1/8" and 1/4" acrylic and polycarbonate laying around. And I was tickled to death when I found the square dowel. I like the 1/4" because of the added weight. The unit all together weighs 2lb 3oz. The dimensions are only 11" long by 6.5" wide by 4.5" high. With the added weight, it sits nicely on its own. I fyou want a nice acrylic one TT, just let me know the dimensions. It would be nice to see how it works on elapids.

The snakes I'm working with now are mostly in the oh-my-god size range, so the ideal setup would be to use a fairly thin clear material that would be light enough to carry around easily. I'm currently using mid sized to large Sterilite and Rubbermaid tubs to place over the animals so that I can enter the cages and clean around them. Large adult Bothrops asper and Lachesis are my main candidates for this sort of treatment. Not sure what the dimension would need to be in inches, but it would need to be as lightweight as possible.

Ok this sure beats the "Strike Shield" I made for use with the aspers. The onlu problem I would have using the box method would be the fact that they never seem to be in a position where this would work on them.
