Yes cranhill they are puppy tamed .. well u can see, there both on me!
Too bad we can't see the females colors .. she really is stunning..
Tx for all the compliments guyd and girls!
I've seen and held both Chubs and Miss Burnsey, they are awesome Savs. They're both looking great Dom, and that boy is gonna be a full size tank soon! :p Gotta find me an eating machine like that.
Very nice Dom!! They seem pretty calm must of took you a while to get them that docile.
Hey Tx again guys!
Actually the male was tamed when I got him about a year and a half ago but the female was quite nasty .. (I got her almost a year ago - She tamed down over a few month of occasianal handling and getting used to me going in her cage occasionally!
Chubs is getting even larger now lol .. and Finally breeding too!
Beleive it or not - he is on a diet although I have a feeling it will take me a good year to get him down to the size I want him to be at...
I LOVE SAV"S!

The savannas will lose weight on their own too as they cycle and go through a slow-down mode for a few months, and they use their fat pads on each side of their bodies as nutrition while they spend these lean months mating.....Good Luck and enjoy them, They're TERRIFIC ANIMALS and very interesting - and sadly few people seem to see this. I think their great and have a real soft spot for them. I had a group of them for 15+ years....
cheers, enjoy!

Tx Mark..
Axtually .. My large male has lost some weight and has grown a bit longer now.. 3 feet 4 inches.. Although he is now living alone and the breeding session did not last longer then a week or so. Unfortunetly, I can't get my female to cycle..
As well, my large female is not doing so good now a days. She has been living on her own for quite a while and has not eaten for over a month now.
She was pretty badly impacted. She was given a shot of calcium and put on cod liver oil about 10 days ago .. I gave it to her everyday for 5 days in a row then I decided to stop ..
She does not seem impacted anymore but still is not eating.. sh'ell grab the food but not eat it.. Unfortunetly, her tail base is looking very slim. I will try live food tonight and then well .. Not quite sure.. I think shw is on her last string.
Any suggestions anyone?

It is my understanding, only dehydrated and underheated monitors get impactions. Have you corrected these things? It sounds like she's already been to a vet...
sorry about your pet being sick. =(
D.
Wow they're huge. How much does one eat in a meal?

great looking animals..im looking to get one of those instead of my tegu. If anyone wants to buy mine off me at the show or trade for a savanah pm me :D
Yeah I'd like one too someday, when I move out though. I dont have the room for a 6 foot enclosure.
D. - I totally agree with you although I am 100% sure my heat and humidity are fine and I have a large water boll she can soak in .. My sacs are my only monitors and i love em to death ..
Anywho ..
The male eats every 2-3 days around 1 medirm rat .. sometimes its a few mice, or bugs too, it all depends..

Beautiful Sav's ..... I love mine to death too, and it's true that it's unfortunate that not everyone can see the beauty in them!

Dom,
What tracy, aka Dragoon says can be true, but with savannas, which are not like other tropical monitors, go through a brumation, or slow down during the african summer months, = sept - february, as do V .albigularis too. Their metabolisms slow down, and processes need much less energy = food, so her slow down on feeding is normal, for the male too. However if she had eggs, she would be eating like a big to make eggs; its typical for the breeding seasons for males and females to be only a few weeks, as males breeding season overlaps females by only a few weeks time in W. Africa....good luck!
markb
She was defenetly impacted and died a little while ago .. I did not think she would make it.. Its really unfortunate as it was one of my fist sav ever .. I am reallu hating taking in resuces now .. I guess I prolonged her life a bit..
Ill post some more pics of the big guy later

There have been two cases of urea-liths = rod-like shaped urea solids that block the colon/cloaca region not allowing evacuation and septic conditions hence-forth....too bad. What a shame....
markb
Are you implying she died from something else Mark? It quite possibly could be .. I did not open her up but there is/was 2 large hard "objects" in her belly. Then again with her history, many things could of lead up to this outcome..
No matter .. I'd ussually open her up to check but I can't on this one.. being on of my pets .. it just does not apeal to me .. Id rather just let her be.. if that makes any sense.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Dom.
I think its super of you to take in homeless animals, even if they have not much time left, you are giving them a gift of a caring safe place to die in. If you were dying or ill, wouldn't you pray your last days were peaceful? Thank you for what you do. These animals go through so much we humans don't know or care about, its sad to think that they are cast aside when their health declines, no one caring.
You lost your pet, but cheered me up, knowing you are doing things like that. Thanks. D.
Thanks D .. I aprecitate that .. although I took a sav yesterday and I garantee this is the LAST rescue I am taking .. it just gets too me .. especially with my job we get about 5 animals droped of a week .. Its too the point were we need to turn some down now. Quite sad..
I can't imagine how bad it is in Toronto being a way bigger dity .. quite sad if u ask me..

Sorry to hear about the sav, I'm keeping my fingers cross for him.
Little Rays Reptile Zoo? Never heard of it, witch part of ontario is it? I'll visit it for sure if I go near!
Yes, to Charlesbourg zoo has been open since june 2003. It's really really nice I think but you gotta love parrots to enjoy it more (they have a really nice Hyacinte ara parrot at the entrace). Thet built a giant indonesian (hum, serre en français) well a big house in glass with lots of animal (alot of small bird flying free) and it's sooooo nice you almost don't see the cages. They have a nice 1.2 dumeril, here's a pic of the big male. Well I think it's was the male...

Hi Dom,
No implications - and I completely understand your feelings on it being a pet - can't get better than that....I was saying the physiology of V. exanthematicus go through a slow-down period annually, and this is to be expected.....if they do not go through this, its possible its metabolism can be altered for the worse - it is still unknown how their natural cycling effects their overall biology; however if you look at V. griseus, if it does not go through hibernation if will surely die...we simply do not know alot, yet! Best of luck with your other animals...
markb
Dom -- Sorry to hear about your loss. I dont blame you for not wanting to cut her open. All the best with the rest of your varanids!
Tx Guys.. I apreciate that..
