Amazing, just amazing.

Is this morph related to any of the other pattern mutations?

diablodragon
02-08-05, 05:15 PM
nope they are not related to any other mutation as far as i can tell. the first baby was from two normal looking parents, as was the second. This year the male from the first litter was finally old enought to breed back to prove that this is a genetic morph.

correct me if I"m wrong Diablo, but

1. Diablo is a female
2. Yes, these are the first ever produced
3. Two normal looking parents not known to be het for anything reproduced a few years ago and created a pink patternless
4. that baby was bred back to mama this year to prouduce proof (in the pics) that the morph is genetic

Brent Strande

True.

They have now proved out to be genetic and they are AMAZING boas! I think that this is a HUGE break for the herp community! Boa morphs rock!

Simply amazing!!! That's simply an amazing boa morph, with an amazing story behind it!! Now WHATEVER you do, don't be stupid and give those away.. if I were you, I'd consult with many of the "biggies" to settle on a reasonable price.. these are worth a gold mine and don't you let anybody tell you otherwise!! Best of luck with them, and please ship some to the folks in Canada, it would be great to have some of those up here!!

Best of luck with your new morph.. do you have a name for it other than "pink paternless boa"??

Thanks for sharing that incredible story and pictures!

they are officially Scoria boas. They are named after a native rock that is about the same color : ). The main problem with calling them that tho is that most people go "HUH?" cause they have no idea what scoria means.

I agree with Bristen wholeheartedly. It is just like you are holding a winning lottery ticket. Don't miss out on this opportunity. Set a highend price just like when other new morphs hit the market. Those amazing boas could buy you a new home. It is not greed...just the way that the morph world works. Those are some of the wildest looking snakes that I have seen for sometime. I would rather keep all of them than sell them for anything short of top dollar.

A wise thing to do would be to invest more into the project, and only sell a few male hets.. it's almost certainly simple recessive... if I were you, I'd sell the hets (at a price that matters, that's for sure) but keep all the Scoria... also invest in a bunch of female boas right away!! (unless you have a bunch of them already lol!)... You need to get new blood into the project right away....

Man that's like the most exciting thing I've ever heard of... how big is your collection? Do you guys do this full time, or are you just hobbiests?

I just noticed that my post didn't make a whole lot of sense... oups... I first say "only sell a few male hets", then I say "sell the hets" lol! I wouldn't recommend selling more than a few male hets if you can keep all of them.. anyways, just wanted to clear my post up...

Right now the collection is pretty small compaired to some other breeders!!!! :D Mostly because of space limitations. These guys take up a lot of room! Also I guess I fell into this by accident the parents were nearly free snakes that people wanted to get rid of, then the first year she bred we wern't sure if the little pink one was genetic or an accident of incubation. Now I know its genetic and I'm very happy!:D The origional full time job and still is, is the little herp store we run, thats how we got the parents. So now I've got 2 full time jobs.

02-10-05, 04:49 PM
You desrve it brother! Its nice to see the little guy get a break now abd then. I hope the project is a fruitful as it is promising! Keep us all updated! I can't wait to see a Salmon Pink Patternless!!! Or an albino! WOOOAAAA!!!!!!!!! :D

This is why I was asking.. this is like a dream for the everyday hobby herper.. that's just insane!! I'm very happy for you guys and will second (uh, third?) what Jeff said!! It's great for some of the little guys to hit big like that.. some exciting.. I'm all pumped up and I have nothing to do with it LOL!!!

You guys should send a couple of pictures and a small article (The "Scoria" story) to Reptiles Magazine or something.. I think that would make a great story :)

I am the bearer of bad news....

This morph HAS been discovered before and is called a "Mocha Boa". A good friend of mine told me it was featured in an issue of Vivarium magazine, and I did a google search and came up with this:

http://www.texasreptiles.com/freaks/boa.html

Also in the google search was an interview with Jeff Ronne on kingsnake where he talked about the Mocha boa.

Still, to get even ONE of these from animals you didn't know were hets is just AWESOME!

KEN:

I saw that info as well and agree with you.

Right now 20k USA for a Scoria Boa aka Pink Patternless aka Mocha Boa, is out of my budget.

And 17k USA for (poss) het pair is just not happening.

Although they are beautiful still out of the budget plans. :D

First of all, I am not trying to offend anyone.
BUT, our boas are not mocha boas, no matter how alike they look, simply because there is almost no way that the mocha boas and mine are related. Both the origional parents of the scorias are cbb not wild caught. Also just curious, but that snake has to be around 5 years old correct? Why have there been no babys produced? also I have only been able to find the one picture of her. So technically we have proven the trait out first in the unlikely event they are the same trait. Also I have noticed that the snakes are similar but there are some differences, like the mocha female has completely patternless sides, our boas do not, they have white bellies with silver sides and have noticable diamond patterns on the sides as well, also ours have striping which is noticibly absent on the mocha boa. What I mean by this is you cannot call our boas mocha boas, because there is no proof that they are the same morph, it could turn out to be like albinos where there are two incompatable strains, or ours could turn out to be codom and the mocha is recessive, or vice versa. Also there are different strains of many color morphs that different breeders have produced, axanthic ball pythons for example, that are very similar in appearance. I do not mean to sound offensive, but I will not tolerate any one calling our boas mocha boas. They are Scoria boas, period. I wish the owner of the mocha boa as much luck as we have had, and would definatly like to see babys of that snake as well.

There's only one way to prove that Scoria is the same as Mocha and we all know what that is, until then all that can be said is that there are some similarities in their appearance. Calling them the same is premature to say the least.

Whether they are related traits or not though is something for their breeders to argue about, it's more or less irrelevant to anyone not involved in producing these snakes in those very first stages.

I know it wouldn't change how much I'd be willing to spend to get in on breeding that morph at the next level in the form of hets.

Invictus
02-12-05, 04:40 AM
I think what's premature is claiming that your morph is something brand new, when it may be the exact same thing. If I suddenly produced albinos from 2 snakes that were 1% possible hets (because let's face it, you just never know how many lines have been bred into this boa), I'm not going to claim I discovered something brand new until I can prove it beyond any shadow of a doubt.

That pic of the Mocha boa may have reduced side markings, but that does NOT automatically make it a different morph. Some albino boas have tails that are so faded that they look like snows - but that doesn't make it so.

MouseKilla
02-12-05, 06:13 AM
You're absolutely right Ken, it cuts both ways, we won't know one way or another unless the two are bred to eachother.

Whatever the case and whether or not we even ever find out for sure is a matter of snake morph trivia, it makes no difference to the rest of us in terms of value.

It only matters to those concerned with the bragging rights and the only people who have any reason to argue about that are the people who have actually produced the animals. Someone deserves the credit for having the pure dumb luck to do it first (if we are dealing with a single morph), I'm just fairly indifferent to who that ends up being.

They're still going to be some of the coolest boas I've ever seen and I'm still going to want some. :)

diablodragon
02-12-05, 10:14 AM
Definay C Adamanteus, stop by!! If that snake is the mocha I can safely say that they are not the same thing, our snakes do not brown out as they age. The male is still just as pink as when he hatched, he has darkened a little but he has no borwn. though I will admit the pattern is more similar to ours the coloration is quite different. I still will not tolerate any one calling my boas mocha boas, as far as I can tell they are not the same. The chances that they are related is slim. Fact is our origional parents were probibly born before the mocha was found in the wild, im not intirely sure because i do not know how old the mocha is today.

Does this mean we'll get the only male pink patternless available in Canada?!?!?!

latazyo
02-13-05, 11:45 AM
why is it that you sold a male instead of a female? with that male you can sire 3 or 4 clutches to all kinds of different morphs or even normal females, but with those females you can only have one per year...am I thinking right?

BOAS_N_PYTHONS
02-13-05, 12:18 PM
LATAZYO:

It may be Jess' s choice, people sell whatever they choose they feel that is important via sales, possibilities, breeding options and so on. Your right about the male having more options in another collection versus a female and only 1 option. But I have not kept up with the thread so I do not know if there were female pink patternless boas in the litter - so that might be a reason too, maybe Jess has alot of males as well. Or a buyer wanted a male and the price was good for both seller/buyer. It can be a number of reasons why sell a male or female. But again yes a male has more options open to him than a female.

I am not up on Boa Morphs but looking around there is little to no information on the Mocha Boa. Which to me would mean, even if the boas are the same, this person has far more than anyone else, has proved them out, and has all the original founding stock (for this line)

Which, in itself, is far more than most herpers could hope for. :D
