Not all reptiles are illegal in New York. According to Reptiles Magazine ( March 2005 issue), large snakes (burmese pythons, anacondas etc) , several monitor species, crocodilians, venomous reptiles are banned. There is a grandfather clause.

I live in NY... Their are barely any illegal reptiles. A list of illegal herps are....
Nile Monitor
Blackthroat monitors
Whitethroat monitors
Crocodile Monitors
Reticulated Pythons
Burmese Pythons
Anacondas
Rock Pythons
Any native species of turtle
Any turtle under 4 inches
Any native species of amphibians
Where are you visiting in NY? By the way New York city is just a small part of New York, and it's not the best part. I live 3 hrs north of NYC and it's nothing like the city. People have a big misconception of what NY is because of NYC.

You can go to Chinatown and see a bunch of little baby turtles =)... Well that's all I remember from the trip. (It was a few years ago though..)
