I have two leos, one seems nice and healthy and fat, the other is gettin skinny, i have them on sand, and havent seen much in the way of defication in the last while so i want to take the sand out, so Im wondering what would be the best thing to prevent impaction, ease of cleaning, but still look natural as i hate the newspaper look, maybe a sand soil mix, soil, packed right in so that its hard, tile i dunno, any ideas are appreciated as the sooner i do this the better,

For now I would switch to paper towel. If you're not finding feces, chance are they might be impacted.

Or use terrarium washable substrate matting (green velvet matting) works good. Now impactions, easy to see/clean dodo :)

Paper towel for now till you know it's not impacted and then like everyone else said slate tile looks great, easy to clean and the nicest thing about it heats nice and evenly with a UTH.

My only concern with the 'astroturf' type stuff is it's harder to clean than you'd think. At least to make sure it's clean and disinfected since it's got lots of little nooks and crannies for parasites and such to hide in... Personally I prefer either a totally throw away substrate like paper towel or the slate idea because it's much easier to disinfect.

I have used:

Astro Turf
Sand
Slate/Tile
Paper Towel
Bark Multch

And paper towel is way better then the rest!

just curious tho, wouldnt the slate be kinda slippery?

Where they occur naturally is in very rocky deserts, so the slate is pretty close to what they would get in their natural environment.

if you find it slippery it might work to scuff it up a bit with some sand paper
