I've been sitting here mulling it over and over again in my head...........just which morph will I add to the collection this year?? :D
My partner and I have narrowed it down to Pieds and Spiders. Now for conversations sake, let's say you had $10 000 (CAD ;)) to invest for the WHOLE year, and it must be spent on one of the two above morphs.....What would you get and why??
Colin
Colin, why put all your eggs in one basket? Though I'm not big on them, a spider is the way to go, I'm guessing they'll be available for under $6000 Cdn. this year, and you'll have money left over to buy a whole poopload of normal females.

That's what I've been thinking Mykee. I love Spiders!!! Also a Spider added to my already meager collection and some more normal girls will give me a great foundation for a Bumble or Killer Bee project. :D If I'm successful starting next season at producing clutches of Albinos (and hets), Pastels, and perhaps even Spiders, than I figure my return off those clutches will give me lots of breathing space for more Recessives in the next few years. There's alot of morphs and I have lots of time, I'm still a young guy and feel that I already have an excellent start to a collection/business/hobby. I'll be sure to let everyone know what I decide when and if the time comes. but for now...let's hear some more opinions!!!

Oh,
$6000!!! Really?? You think they'll drop that much?? That's like a 50% cut from last year?? Yikes, that gets my hopes hope!! Male Spider, and pair of het pieds!!!! Then I can trade my left nut for as many normal girls as I can get!!!! :D :p

I think that I would also go with the spider and a whole sh*t load of normal female then after they reproduce then I would, like you said above have lots of breathing space to get some simple recessive morphs.

I'd say Pied's myself, love those guys.
Lots of options to consider here, a spider is a no brainer in the short term, return on investment is much faster with a dominant mutation and so a spider would be the way to go.
On the other hand, thinking long term, pieds will be a sound investment for many more years then a spider would be, after all, as Mykee pointed out, spiders will become much more economical every year while a recessive mutation like pieds will hold higher value down the line.
Those thinking long term will be way ahead of the game by the time dominant and co-dominant mutations fall at the lower end of investment.
For that reason, my opinion is that pieds would be a better investement, produce pieds, raise them AND THEN breed them back to Spiders and Pastels and be that much more ahead of everyone else.
Over and above the investment, get the mutation you enjoy and work with those, you will be much happier getting what you like...

The only problem with the "long term" thinking is, within 2 years, you could have taken just a PART of the money you made from a Spider, and bought a PAIR of Pieds and like 4 or 5 female hets. Instead of growing up the het Pieds to make your Pied down the road. Money in your pocket NOW means you can do more things when you re-invest. Just because an animal will hold its value longer, DOES NOT mean it will make you more money. Not even close.
But having said all that; you GOTTA get what YOU like. If you don't enjoy working with it or you don't like the looks, then what's the point? Money isn't everything.
Best of luck! :)

personally, i like the look of the spiders a lot better; the gold color, the green eyes, the awesome head patterns.

i would go with spider. even if you only sell one spider you could get an albino, or a pair of pastels ( so you could try producing supers) or a axanthic. definatly i agree with jeff. with the spider you can produce sooner and sell, with that money buy some recessives and make hets. the possibilities are endless as far as i can see.

Wow, my mind was already made up pretty much, but you guys have tipped me over the edge. I love Spiders!!! Don't get me wrong I also love Pieds as well!!! (Doesn't everyone??), but the faster return on the Spiders, I think will open up way more opportunities for me in the next few years, and allow me to buy a Pied male and numerous het girls in a year or two instead of just a het trio now. Now all I gotta do is make my partner see the light!!! :p He originally got into this with me cause of Pieds, so it might not be easy. Anyways, thanks for the input guys and keep it coming! :)

I've started with 1.2 Het Albinos because I love the Albino morph. But I'm thinking that I want to pickup a male pastel and some normal females this year and then go for the Pastel Albino in a few years.

I have thought about this also BornboreD and have decided on the spider just for the crosses you can make with it.
I want to add it to my Albino and Pastel and some other projects to produce some of the designer morphs.
I do like the spider morph alone BUT the crosses you can make are just outstanding. They can also help PAY for other morphs the wife and myself love:)
Just my 2 cents;)

I'm a big fan of Spiders as I am Pieds and many other morphs. I think it is important to always maintain a balance. By this I mean having an equal share of co-dom and recessive mutations in your collection. When crossed you get way better odds than the 1 in 16 with double hets. I also think the combinations are limitless.
I don't think Spiders will take as much of a drop this year because what we experienced last year was a price drop that should have taken place over the past 3 years. I will also speculate that there might not be as many normal spiders (not het for something else) produced in 2005. A lot of people got into Spiders, paid the big bucks, and wanted a fast return. They bred them to a slew of normal females and hit the marrket with everyone else and their brother. I paid $18,000 USF for my spider in 2003 and it was the best investment I ever made. Was I pissed when the price dropped? NO! It just made spiders more affordable for more people which resulted in more sales.
Next year those people that paniced and drop their prices initially will try to produce more of the next great morph. What that is I don't know, but I'm sure they think they do. As well Spiders will be bred to albinos and caramels and pieds and all the other recessive traits and in order to ask more money they will be selling spiders het fors.
Spiders are truly unique. They offer two things. They are a colour and pattern mutation. 2 bangs for your buck! The clown does the same. Spiders also pack one hell of a WOW factor!

My hubby and I are considering a female Spider this year if we can swing it!! LOL, I know technically a male would be the better choice but a female is less expensive and we have to do some home renos this year. We already have a het pied male and will be looking for poss het pied, poss het OG females as well.
