I recently purchased a 4 month old male Dumerils Boa.
This is my first experience with this type of boa. Is it
normal for the boa to hide underneath a cave and not
show itself. It seems very inactive but healthy. It hasn't
eaten yet but I have been told that is normal for this
type of boa not eating for some time until it becomes
accustomed to it's new surroundings. Can anyone shed
light on this for me.

I'd say it's just shy, and trying to warm up to its enclosure and you. My Red tail has become a bit ornary the last few days but I just think it's because he's finally getting settled in and has found something he doesn't like. I've been changing his furniture around and putting better things in and more hides to see what he likes best. So far I think he just likes being under the paper towels best. He doesn't much use his humid hide, or the hide in which is available under his water dish.

yea thats normal for a dumerils to hide, alot of times theyll hide under the bedding to make them feel they are more secure...also on the eating part it could be because of the temps in the tank, remember dumerils like it cooler than the more common boas and most the time a snake wont eat unless hes at the right temp, dec. 04s Reptile Magazine talkd a lot about caring for dumerils it could be some good help to you

That's normal behaviour. Are you using shredded aspen bedding? If not, I'd suggest doing so. Young Dums like to burrow and the aspen allows them to hide wherever they want (for better thermoregulation as well as feeling secure), rather than just in the hide you provide.
