when i signed my lease for my new apartment it said that animals of any kind were not prohibited in or around the premises!
my old landlord is a well known lawyer in my town and she said they could not legally evict us if we aquired the animals after we moved in because of some new law that they passed stating that animals are part of the family is this true or are there different stipulations that i am not awre of?
thanks for any help!

First off, you should phone the city office and ask about their by - laws

Every city has it's own by-laws. Find out what your's are.

If you already signed the lease you've pretty much shot yourself in the foot unless there's a bylaw in your city specifically prohibiting landlords from putting such clauses in their leases.

But check with bylaw enforcement anyhow and see what's what... Also check to see if there's a renter's association or a Landlord Tennant board in your area as well.

I went though the same thing.. I just don't make it an issue to display my snakes... Yes the landlord knows.. and 1-2 other ppl in the building,, I don't make it an issue to display my snakes to my neighbors...I move in here.. and I told them B4 i moved in that I had a small lizard... to see what there responce was going to be.. I put in on the application.. EVEN thou i didn't have a lizard.. I have my 2 BP.. Now i don't take them outside with out placing them in a pillow case.. and hidin away for the fear that someone my be TERRIFIED of snakes.. and I don't want someone to freak out.. so ...

AS the old saying....WHAT they don't know.. can't hurt

Sounds stupid but it is called the fluffy act lol A old lady lived in a bilding in Toronto and new owners touck over and tryed to evict her and she went to court and wone ,It is eleagle to refuse pets unless the animals are a danger to some one else or do damage to the propity look into this I would tell them nothing if itis a snake or reptile

I'm serious that did happen in Toronto abought 20 or so years ago.As for large reptiles that could be another story alltogether !

The 'Fluffy Act' is a fact in Ontario. Unless the animal is illegal in your city/town/region, they can't refuse to let you have pets, provided you stay within the legal limit of animals and species. They can charge you for any damage done by the animal and if you scare the heebie jeebies out of the other tennants they can start an eviction notice. The standard leases do say 'no pets' in an attempt to stop people from acquiring them, since not many people know about the law.
