Hey-
I just recieved this turtle from a little boy whos mother didn't want it anymore. I live in Minnesota so I was thinking it could be a painted turtle cause there are so many around. Or I was thinking it could be a red-eared slider? Is there any way to find out what it is for positive?
Thanks Eric

males have convex bellies, females have flat bellies.....On all the ones I've seen it's been pretty easy to tell that way, the curve is pretty obvious on males

You won't be able to tell for sure until the turtle is a few years old, however. Other ways to tell-
1. Males grow very long front claws in comparison to females
2. Males have a pointy head, the females is broad and larger
3. Females grow substantially larger than males. The female also has a bulky wider shell as opposed to the more elongated, flatter look of the male.
4. Males have a large thick tail and the cloaca extends past the edge of the marginal scutes. The female has more of a short stubby tail and the cloaca usually does not extend past the marginals.

Hope this helps, good luck,

Chris R
