Well lastnight was my last night with my male burm who still had a LONG life ahead of him. Had him out at about 7pm to feed took his small rat like always and then put him up, messd around and changed his lights at like 12am, wake up today for work and hes dead. Turns out he had some how gotten bedding in his mouth lastnight sometime and things went down hill for him then on. The thing is is Repti Bark the bedding i was using is suppose to be a really good bedding but i guess the two big bags i have will be going in the trash

Im sorry to hear about the burm. When using loose substrates its best to feed in a seperate container. Or better yet use newspaper, papertowels or butcher paper as a substrate.

so sorry to hear that. are you going to skin it for something to remember it by? (seriouse, I know alot of people who do this) but eitehr way again so sorry to ehar about your burm. can you give more detail on how you found him? bark placement in it's mouth? Im having trouble picturing the bark causing fatal harm. Did it liek cmpletely block its air way? did he injest it? even i he injested it wouldnt it take the time to not pass and become internaly infected befor it dies?

thanks, again sorry about your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It always hurts to loose a beloved pet espically when it happens so unexpectedly.

no he didnt consume the repti bark while eating,
If you know this then how did this hapen,
Turns out he had some how gotten bedding in his mouth lastnight sometime
Even if he did get some bedding in his mouth how could that have caused his death? Even if a burm swallowed some I still have my doubts it would have killed him. Think of all the dirt they eat while eating in the wild.
I think a necropsy is in order.

Tevor, he probably watched the snake eat, but oviously never saw the snake "injest" bark.:)

Also, I agree a necropsy is a good idea.

he said he fed it in a diffrent container/ so he obviosly knows it dint injest it while eating/ I agree with trevor, I highly doubt the bark killed him.

A lot of times, snakes in their death throes open their mouths and get substrate in them. It's not the cause of death, just a side effect of the open mouthed gape that snakes can exhibit while dying. Definitely a necropsy is in order. Do not freeze the snake- refrigerate and take to the vet within 24 hours if possible.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

lolaophidia......i do know that does happen while a snake is dieing...
when i found the snake his head was up side down with his mouth just about full of bark i took my tongs and pulld it all out and it seemd as if there was something making the bark stick together with a black color, he was also tryn to dispose his waste but never got it all the way out
i dont really believe the bark could have killd the snake but its just the first thing that came to mind, i just really cant figure out what could have caused the death and was a healthy snake never missed a meal and was always active always had good sheds and what not

I am terribly sorry. I hate it when any snakes dies but a burm is not just a snake. To me they are a part of life and they are probably my favorite snake overall. I'm sorry again.

Im with daiyoukai and trevor, more details would be nice.
lolaophidia explains probability for the substrait in its mouth, but still no cause
I would spend the money on the necropsy.
interested in knowing more.

Why? Go back and read the all the post and you'll see that no one thinks it was the bark.
Cheers,

I've seen the mouth full dirt thing with bears and wolfs while out hunting. I'm pretty sure its just something to do with the pain. I'ld have to agree that it was unlikely the cause of death.
