Explain this advertisement to me......

There's currently an ad for an adult boa in the classifieds section. This is what it reads:

female salmon 66% het albino 50% het sunglow


LOL! HUH? A sunglow is an albino Salmon, so how the he!! can this thing be 66% het for albino, yet only 50% het for sunglow?

I saw that too - some people, jeesh.

However, if you want to get technical, a salmon 50% het albino, isn't really a 50% het sunglow.

Bred to a sunglow male, 37.5% - "should" be sunglow of which 33% are super sunglows. Bred to an albino male, only 25% of the babies "should" be sunglows. Just statistics, but kinda misleading for newbies. I use the word should to denote probability.

Good eye Jeff! I'd expect that from a newbie, but not from someone who should know a thing or 2 about genetics.

A salmon boa that shows albino is a sunglow boa.

When most people talk about a salmon 50% sunglow, they mean a salmon 50% het albino. The 2 are interchangeable for all intense purposes.

I haven't looked at boa genetics much...but I always thought that a sunglow was an albino salmon...but I got confused with seeing all these classifieds that show the animal as a double het. Thanks for clearing it up for me guys!

No, Ryan is correct, the funny part is that the animal is 66% het albino, but its only 50% het for sunglow? Huh? If an animal is 66% het for albino and its a Salmon, then its a Salmon, 66% het for Sunglow. Just like if it was Salmon 100% het albino, then it would be 100% DH Sunglow.

So what is the animal? Does it have a 66% chance of carrying the albino gene or does it have 50% chance of carrying the albino gene? Very misleading ad. I wouldn't touch the animal unless the seller knew exactly what it was he was representing.

The snake he is selling is probably 66% het GHOST 50% het sunglow. But he had a brainfart while making the ad. It is funny as hell, how one word can start a whole thread about genetics. Im not complaining, it is actually informational. Take care.

Instead of being a child and thinking of this as an attack, you COULD look at this as people who are trying to help you look a little more professional by ACCURATELY representing animals you are attempting to sell.

Most people are having a hard enough time with genetics as it is, without trying to decifer mislabeled animals.

If everything is sooo touchy these days that we can't discuss what to label the genetics of animal for sale, then we've truly hit an all-time low in the biz. Oh well. Fun to see people's true nature come out under duress.

Moral? Properly label the animals you're selling and you'll avoid being ridiculed or what you perceive to be ridicule.

And how does that help anyone who maybe a bit green in genetics to see the ad say one thing, and then another, especially when maybe they were thinking about buying the animal in question. The whole thing was brought to my attention because I had a customer who was loking for DH Sunglows and asked me if I had any. I don't right now, but he saw the ad and asked me about it. I had no idea what to tell him, as not even I could figure the ad out.

I've sent Shawn a PM in the past about misrepresenting the genetics of animals. I had hoped it would have opened his eyes and made him take an extra second or two to make sure what he's selling IS what he is saying is for sale. You can't blame anyone for calling you on it, man.

Just as a side note to others, make darn sure you get the genetics right. If you don't know, ask. Remember, a good portion of the people that will be considering your animals KNOW what they are talking about. Mistakes are mistakes and they happen but try to get it right. It makes a difference to your reputation in the end and, of course, the sale of the animal.

That's the whole thing Crannie. How can you expect people to think that you know what you're doing, when you can't even get the genetics of YOUR OWN ANIMAL right? If I was "boa" I wouldn't be having a great Sunday evening, knowing that I can't even get the genetics right of an animal I was selling. And remember, none of this would have even taken place had the animal been labelled properly. An animal can't be 66% het albino AND 50% het albino at the same time. You make an ad like that, expect to be called out on it. And for people to whine about him being called out on, tough nuts. If you don't want to be corrected, DON'T MAKE MISTAKES. I would expect ANYONE to do the same for me if I labelled an animal wrong. Especially with the amount of money flying around for some of these creatures.

Not sure why this ended up in a flame war, but I have an sneaky suspicion that if it was any other breeder, they would have simply replied "haha my bad, thanks for pointing it out" and then changed the ad. Most of the breeders I deal with would have. But then again, most of the breeders I know wouldn't have made that blunder.

Misrepresentation seems to be the emerging trend among some disreputable breeders. Lots of people out there getting taken for their hard earned money. If you cant call someone out on their lies (or stupidity) what is the point? I respect Jeff for telling it like it is and being clear, concise and to the point. If you can't take it, stop misrepresenting your animals and he will probably stop calling you out (or maybe he won't :D )

I don't know how common outright fraud is in this business but I know I wouldn't put up a lot of money on a so-called het unless the breeder had the reputation to back it up. Possible hets from unknown middle men is just asking for trouble. Animals whose stated genetics are impossible aren't likely good news either.

Then I got a PM from Tim and he told me their are no PASTEL jungle corns and that I should fix my add so I don`t look like an idiot _ i laughed it off and was greatful because what I ment to type was ALBINO jungle corns....

Sometimes you just make a mistake and mistakes are to be laughed at
