View Full Version : What Types of Food?

What other kinds of food can you give your Jungle Carpet Python? Im well aware that it may make them not wanna eat certain kinds of food, but my snake will eat anything thats big enough for it to take down, cuz she's crazy. I've tried feeding her a small bird before in the spring. They probably naturally eat birds since they're climbers. Has anyone fed their snakes anything besides the traditional mouse/rat? I'd like to see my snake eat an anole or a budgie or something. I work at a Pet Store, so the my only hesitation is that it may decide it only wants to eat that, but Im not too worried.

MIKE:
Try meat lasagna or chocolate cake, lol :D.
Nah other than the nutritional mouse and rat, I have not ventured in changing much of a snake' s diet to birds or any other possible naturalistic diet.

You're risking him getting attached to a certain type of meal, possibly chicks, and he may never switch back to rats.
Id stick to rats as its been proven over the years to allow the animal to live a proper, healthy, long life.

Rats and mice. Put your effort into building an awesome cage, taking great photos, etc etc... Rats and mice have proven to support successful events (breeding) over and over again. No need to fix what isn't broken.

I'd also have to agree, plus with an anole you'd risk parasites and whatnot...
I'd like to see my snake eat an anole or a budgie or something.
Do you want to see him eat it for the variety, or simply to see a snake kill a lizard? I don't want to sound like I'm attacking you, but I'm getting the impression that you feed live (if not, I do apologize) and in that case I'd recommend switching to FT or FK as you are risking your snakes health with every live feeding attempt
If you already feed FT or FK, then I apologize, but dont know why you'd like to see it eat an anole, that'd be kinda boring unless it were live...

I have thought about it, when my JCP is of size I will try feeding it a bird, I fed it a live mouse the other day and it was pretty sweet, he was up in the tree and just picked the thing off the ground, nearly squeezed the eye balls out of the thing.
I would not try a lizard just for the problem of parasites, but what ever else he can eat that is still healthy I would probably try.
I like the hunt and the attack of feeding live, it is one of the major reasons that I keep snakes.

whats more important, a 2$ rat/mouse or your snake? the prey could easily kill or scar your snake! i would NEVER feed my snake live! if you wanna see that kind of stuff rent the movie andaconda!

I have to admit I like to see the whole hunt thing too but I have to agree with everyone else, what's more important an interesting show or the saftey of your snake, and whats so wrong with seeing your snake attack a F/T rat that you are wiggling? That is just as neat to see and you don't have to worry about internal parasites or your snake getting attacked. Plus F/T is way more convient too!!! Just my 2 cents, but its up to you.

Yeah I know you see snakes out in the wild being killed all the time from mouse attacks.

It's not so much the mouse/rat killing the snake but rather injuring it. That might just lead to future vet bills. People are just trying to give you some sound(and proven) advice on feeding your snake.

1. My snake will not eat dead food
2. It would rather go for my hand than the tongs if I tried shaking
3. I enjoy the hunt, and its natural for the snake and makes it
strong. It grabs the unsuspecting rodent and eats it while
hanging from its tree.
4. My snake is gangster and it knows what its doing. I dont feed
it anything large enough for it to hurt the snake. The only time
the snake gets injured is when dumb owners leave the rodent
in the tank unattended. I've had several snakes, and fed most
of them live.

Not true. Responsible live feeding is safer, but there is plenty of room for error.
And, feeding your snake live in its' captive man-made enclosure within your house in the continent North America is of course, more natural for the snake indeed.
If you just want to watch it kill something different every week, watch a movie.

My snake is gangster because its cool and a rowdy little serpant. Not cuz its from the "hood" of Australia. Me using the word gangster does not have the same implications as you are refering it to.
I work at a petstore and MANY of the customers buying feeder food, purchase live food to be fed live to their animals. I've fed three of my snakes live food and have NEVER had an icident. That's countless times of feeding, so Im not worried. And Im not wanting to watch it kill, Im wanting to watch what a constricitor is meant to do - CONSTRICT. I dont wanna see it wrap around some thawd vermine I take out of my freezer.
I am an experienced and knowledgable snake and reptile owner, and I know what Im doing. Its not like I feed all of my animals live. Its a matter of what the snake will decide to eat.
