You should read up on basic care about snakes in general before you get into carpets. Its good you want to learn and ask questions but im pretty sure if you searched google for some care sheets and got some basic knowledge of snakes most of your questions would be answered.

I am not trying to be rude or sound as if I dont want to help but I know your new and I think all people that are new to snakes should do their research first and ask any questions you may still have after considering most info can be found in care sheets :p

You just got a Corn snake and I would suggest you take it slow and read up as much as you can before looking into a totaly new species of snake.

I remember when I got my first Ball python and then a week later got a pueblan milksnake that musked all over me and it was so fast and bit me and was so much different then a ball python lol. A few months later I got my 3'rd snake which was a Irian Jaya Carpet and thinking it was like a Ball python I let it near my face and BAM it almost got my eye lol. Im not trying to scare you away from getting a new snake but just letting you know all snakes are different in their own ways and proper research will need to be done so that you can supply the best for your soon to be new snake.

Go read some info and come back and im sure many people including myself will gladly answer any questions you still have.

They are nocturnal (actually crepuscular) so only ambient room lighting is necessary. You can use a fluorescent though, on for 12 hours, if you are building a display tank.
