How are peachthroats as to handeling, size, feeding, and breeding? Im gonna get rid of my tokay geckos and maybe get one if I hear what I want to hear..... I know a guy that wants to get rid of his and its just 10 inches without tail and he said he would give it to me for free. I dont want something that gets 8 ft long but 3 - 4 ft is ok.
Thanks

So what if someone just tells you what you want to hear, even though it might not be true? And didnt you say several times you arent getting any more reptiles till your BP is better?

They bite, tail slap and are generally unpleasent. Hard to breed in captivity. Not a good starter monitor.

Chris - I did say this but it is for free and everything I need is free from them. I will take animals for free......

so you would take in an animal that ur not ready for? sorry if i sound rude, but make sure your doing ur research.
heres a good site. www.centralpets.com, im sure a lot of the monitor breeders will have caresheets if you know where to look on their site.
Even if everything is free it is still going need need a big cage when it gets to be bigger and thats not cheap. Also you were already bitching about vet bills and gas money for your ball python. Why don't you slow down and care for what you have already.

Are you serious? Anyone with this kind of mentality should not own animals of ANY kind...

nguyen - Dont worry, I have already looked them up and they sound nice but id probably keep it as a looking pet like my tokay gecko.
Mark - Im not against building cages and buying anything for anything or doing anything for anything,
second skin - oh wow, I have got a few reptiles for free and non have died on me so u shouldnt worry. Even if it wasnt for free id still probably buy it.
Thanks

First of all, I want to get this snake well....
Did you run this plan by your parents first...?

Love monitors but care sheets under estimate how difficult it can be to care for them. Remember those who write them have experience. For a first monitor I'd go with a Savannah or something of that nature. Not because they're cheap but the are quite hardy, but you'll do what you want either way. About the running it by your parents thing I always did that....when I walked in the door with it :)
Most kids aren't that lucky though and now that I'm older I realized I should've asked them first. But I hope that second skin guy above was being sarcastic...Seems like it but if he wasn't I'd really like to meet him personally and have a good talk with him, that's some pretty rotten stuff right there. It's like ehh screw it have a baby you'll see what it's like soon enough if it dies so what it was free....
To me I do put reptiles and humans on the same level might be wrong but it's how I feel

it funny how hard it is to tell sarcasim from honesty sometimes
(but if there is still any doubt , HELL yes I was being sarcastic)
I wouldnt wish that on any monitor:)

^ okay.......
VI: For one, i knew if i was a mom, i wouldn't want any more reptiles than 5, because if my kid didn't take them with them, guess who would be stuck with them? Me. Not my pets. Theirs. Oh well LOL

Monitors are harder to keep than ball pythons and I would recomend a great deal of research. When you started this thread you had no idea how to take care of the species or even how big it got; 29 hours later you posted that you'd looked into them and they sound nice. IMO that's not enough time to learn everything you should know before getting into a completely new genre of herp. I'd say get back to the books (and read a lot), then decide later.
Edit: Just thought I'd add, food aint cheap.

Oh, food is NOT cheap, you got that right....my sav full grown will probably eat $200 worth of food a month ><
Monitors are NOT beginner herps; they are considerably more difficult than ball pythons and geckos. For one, housing for a full grown monitor is never easy; even the smallest species will need a 4x2x2' enclosure when fully grown. With a medium sized monitor you will need something even larger, most likely custom built. DO NOT get a monitor thinking it might stay small; the only reason it would stay small is if you weren't caring for it properly and it was very unhealthy.
Monitors are also high maintenance; I'd say I spend about as much time on my sav as I do all 12 of my snakes combined.
Also, as other people mentioned, monitors are not cheap. If you really want to get into monitors, get ackies or a sav. Ackies may be expensive to start, but no matter what kind of monitor you get the initial price of the animal pales in comparison with the food bills.
Anyway, I would leave the peachthroat until you got some more monitor experience under your built.

like they said monitors are ultra high maintenece. i have a juvi black throat that i pondered and read on for about two years before i found him half dead a a local ****** pet shop. he was 10 snount to tail tip, last february. guess how long he is now, almost 4 feet. your getting your self into a big time commitment. just to give you an idea. when i do just like cage maintence on my blackies cage it takes the same amount of time that it does for me to tear down, clean and redo the other 12 or so cages that i have in my reptile room. granted im not bitching because he is probably my favorite lizard i have ever had but i think you need to think a bit harder on this

I agree with everyone in that a Peachie is not a good choice for a first time monitor. But...............Boscs aren't either. Ackies are a great first time monitor and the prices have even come down some. When it comes to monitors start small and work your way up.
If you can't take care of a ball python a monitor of any species is to much for you. Maybe you should start with Bearded Dragons.

VI, I think it's time that some one talks some sense into you......Im really fed up with all of your plans on getting new reptiles when the first one you got(one of the easiest snakes to take care of) was not "easy" enough for you to handle.....You never take what people say in consideration and you always pass by the negative replies and go on to the positives....Im only 15 myself, but i know enough to know that you cant get everything you want...I would like to get soo many things but i cant because i dont have the money and the time...Ive got a pretty steady collection now and ive been reading up on a dwarf retic for about 4 months now and hopefully im gunna get it next september...You have shown almost everyone on ssnakess that you are not responsible enough to get what you want and i dont even think you are responsible enough to have your ball python....I have 2 ball pythons and they were my first reptiles....but i did alot of research ahead of time because i knew what it takes....you clearly dont and i wish you would just stop getting new stuff and stop ignoring the info you are getting from some of the most knowledgable people when it comes to snakes...i'm really not intentionally trying to be mean but if thats what it takes then so be it.....All im trying to say is, stick with what you've got and get that ball python back to perfect health before you go on and get anything else!.......Connor
