Melamine

Hey everyone, I'm planning on make some enclosures for my geckos before this summer hits. I was wondering how long you think a melamine enclosure that was well sealed would hold up to 75-100% humidity? I know it will eventually crap out on me but it I could get a year otuta them it would be worth my effort. Thanks.

Orrrr.....heh heh..... you build it out of plywood, sand it REAL NICE, paint it with an awesome paint in ANY colour you want, and it'll last 10 years easy and by 3 times lighter.

Hmmmm tough choice though..............not! ;)

Yea I was considering do that too Favelle but I was planning on getting plastic eventuallly as you can't beat it. But what kind of paint would I need? Or what could I coat paint with? PolayurethanE?

Plywood sealed with melamine paint is about as good as it gets without going to an epoxy or fibreglass resin. The biggest problem with melamine isn't the coating - it's the particle board underneath. Melamine paint is used on sinks and bathtubs, so it's pretty good at resisting water.

Thanks Ken, what other water resistant type coatings are there? I'm going to use plywood now I guess. Only about 10 or 20 dollars more so what the hill eh? Does it matter if I use Fir or oak or maple or spruce? Thanks.
