sphagnum moss question

The place I get sphagnum moss sells it in a large bag, and it's pretty wet when you buy it.

What's the best option? Drying it out or leaving it wet? I can't use the big bags that quickly.

That's a good question. I've only ever been able to buy it dry.

i would spread it out to dry so it doesnt mildew. or keep it in a really cool place. Once you open the bag and fresh air gets in i'm sure it will mildew.

I know what you mean I get a big bag of it thats somewhat moist too but what I get doesn't mildew. It dries out quickly, and I've had no problems with it. You can get it offline from the mosser lee company thats the best in my oppinion, best prices as well.

I've been buying large bags from Rona (formerly Revy & building box) They have a good price on it. I think it's about 9 bucks for a big bag which I have paid up to 20 bucks for in past years.
It doesn't matter if you keep it moist or dry.
I find it doesn't really mildew due to the acid content which resists the growth of fungi and mould, and rot.
If it dries out it's no big deal, and it can be compressed and even vacuum packed if you want to decrease the mass, but it takes time to nead water back into it to rehydrate it. When it's dry it's a bit messy and dusty which is a minor inconvenience.

I buy a bag every season and toss it in the back of the garage, where it usually freezes at some point. If it's still moist by the following summer great, it makes it slightly less work. If its dried out, it just means adding water to it.
