Afternoon,

I'm interested in acquiring Indian Pythons but meeting little success. Can anyone point me in the right direction, besides an
overseas trip?

Thanks,

Bruce

If you are looking for true Indians (Pimbaru.)

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL.

Many of these labeled as Indians are infact, crosses.

IF you give me a few minutes....I will find pictures for you. Also...give me another few..and I can point you in the right directioln on where to acquire these.

Just a ?

Where are you located? This will help alot.

Thanks,

BU

So far all I found were Indian Pythons at Prehistoric Pets int he US...for sale only to CA residents.

Im thinking you could try to contact him..and ask if he is aware of any place to purchase Indians in Canada

No, definately to breed.
It seems that the two, molorus and pimbura, may be interbred and not two distinct sub-species anymore.
Sorry, I don't believe in further diluting the gene pool for crosses.

Very good! Glad to hear it.

In that case...I will keep a CLOSE eye for pure Indians and let you know if I find anything.

Indian Pythons are Python molurus molurus. P. molurus pimbura are Ceylon pythons, a separate by very similar subspecies.
Under the washington convention (CITES) both are considered to be one in the same because of the extreme difficulty in telling them apart.
The big problem with this species is they are appendix one, unlike burms, retics and sebaes which are appendix 2.
Appendix one species require two CITES permits for legal international trade. One permit from the country of origin and one from the receiving country.
To legally import these you'd need to first get the Canadian government to issue you an import permit, something that is quite difficult and I don't believe has been done for that species.
Then of course you'd have to find a seller in a country that would be willing to produce an export permit for them. This might be possible from Europe
There is an additional problem with pure Indian pythons in the USA. They are included on the list of endangered species and the US requires special permits just to take them across state lines.
This is why you see few ads, and its also unfortunately why people are intergrading them and hybridizing them, to create mutts that aren't the protected species. Unfortunately this completely contradicts the original goal of CITES. Rather than protecting the species, it's leading to the watering down and mixing of the genotype just to circumvent the law.
Pure M&M's are close to non existant in captivity.

i know i will get some serious flack for this but if you want pure indians or what ever (sanzanias in my case) just go there and bring them back yourself. We get royally shafted by gov. so why let them control animals that are already CAPTIVE BRED, note i am not talking about imports or wc animals here. I'd do it if i wanted something bad enough. just my $0.02
