Yellow foot I'm trying to rehabilitate.*pics*

This tort has had a hard go at it. When I first saw it back in July it was outside in a pen with ducks and guinea pigs. I informed the owner about the dangers of such a set up bought my rats I was there for and left. I was then told he sold it to a local reptile zoo. I was also told that the previous owner had once kept it with chickens. I never saw that but I did see it when the previous owner had it and it was being housed in a plywood box with no substrate and a Red foot.
The reason I have it is because I returned to the owners house on Thursday to pick up more rats and help him set up his cages for his two new snakes. When I arrived I saw the tort on the kitchen floor about 5 feet from the door that when opened left in a draft that brought down the temp even lower then the 65 the tort was sitting at. I had my reytek with me because I was there to help him set up his cages. I couldn't believe it when I check the torts temp he was 65. Sitting on the kitchen floor with no food or water or heat and sharing the company of two dogs and at least two cats I knew I had to take him home.
I have no plans to keep it but I since I've picked it up I've spent $150 and I'm off to the vet on Monday.

On Monday I'll be building him an 8x4x18 tort table.

Good luck with him Trevor. I hope he make a full recovery for you. Its always rewarding to rescue an animal, but can it ever get expensive lol.

The problem get's more complicated. I'd give the guy back his tort with the cage I'm going to build but I know he doesn't have room for it. It's not a pretty situation. I'm housing and paying for an animal that the person who owns doesn't have the room for or the equipment needed to house it and care for it properly. I'm in no hurry to send it back. I think it would be best for him to sell it like he was suposed to and I'll keep it here until it sells. Once it's better of course.

Good to hear that the poor guy is now getting the help he needs, I'm sure the heat alone, he's lovin'. Anyways good for you for helpin him out Trevor, I as well would keep him until a good home finds(buys) him, who knows maybe you'll get attached :)

Man that is to bad. I would love to have the little guy. It is too bad that he doesn't have the room. At some point you have to do what is best for the animal even if it sucks for you. Good for you Trevor in trying to help out. If he is interested in snakes maybe a trade or selling it for more snakes would peak his interest. Good luck and keep us posted.

A trade for snakes! What a great idea! I know someone who might be willing to do that if I don't do it myself! Then once he's mine I can sell him to an experienced keeper if I don't keep him myself.

I was at the vet today for something else and I made an appointment for next week so I can have a culture done. Already he seems a bit better. He has had two dumps and at least one pee. I know because he didn't on the floor while eating. And yes now that he's warm his apetite is back. He ate a nice big plate of Papaya, Mango, Romain and mushrooms. I also covered in repti-vite from zoomeds. Probably the first time he's ever had that. I've also been soaking him twice a day.
I can't wait to get his tort table built. I had to put it off to next Saturday. In one week I'll post updated pics of him so we can see if there is a difference.

Good luck with the Tort. I'm a rehaber with the Chihuahua Desert Wildlife Rescue. I do mostly Reptiles that can be released back to the wild. I have soft spot for Torts. You just dont see as many in the wild as you used to.

You know what though Trevor, his shell looks well developed so he must of been getting a good diet. Are there any soft spots? You see pyrimiding way to much as well as uneven scutes.

I don't think there are any soft spots. I haven't felt any that is. I did notice where someone tried to drill a whole in his shell in a couple of different spots in the back.
Turts and Torts are the best rep to keep. It is a rewarding experiance to interact with them.
True but they are so much work. That's why I don't keep them. I love the, I stated with turtles as a kid. Now that I keep herps and know how to do it right I won't own one because I know how much work and time it takes to do it right. This one tort takes up so much time it's crazy. Now that I'm going back to work this morning I'll only be able to soak him once a day.:(

Holes in the back of the shell? Someone was trying to leash him. It was a comman practise back in the "dark" ages to drill a hole insert a line on hook so your tort wouldn't wonder off. People suck. Hopefully everyone knows better now a days. I know how much work they can be I have a "few" myself. They are a lot more time consuming then a snake! But worth it. Speaking of I should go clean some water dishes!
