I guess I have to be a little more cautious with this girl during feeding time. She was somewhat ill with a bad abcess in her mouth, but thats completely healed now.
And now, she is acting as a monitor should! Always thinking about food, this girl has such a fierce feeding response.
I got bit as i was moving her into her feeding bin. After a few minutes, she let go. I tried a bit of vinegar to get her off, and she just bit down harder.
I only held her up like this for the photo, the rest of the time she was on the ground pulling and biting harder. Its a situation like this where you can appreciate the fact that their teeth aren't really designed for lacerating their prey. All i had were a few small tooth marks, some swelling, and lots of saliva.

A lesson learned for sure.. don't become complacent with your day to day handling and feeding tasks.
hope everyone has a safe and happy new year!

My old Savanna Monitor use to be as sweet as could be.....until I went on vacation for a week and left her in the care of my parents.
I came home to a grumpy, pissy ol' Sav.
:( I miss her

Yeah I'm definatly confident that my Sav won't bite me. I'm only this way so I don't get all nervous and jerkey when I'm dealing with him. That and after 4 years of a nice lil sav they tend to make you feel like they are you little buddy. However I know I could still get bit I just don't like to think about it.
I did alwaysget tagged however when I went to check his temp with the temp gun this week since I've been feeding him black mice he lunged at the temp gun because of its black color luckily he only went after the gun and not my hand.

What I allways find funny about these pics is the fact that you took the time to take a pic of it.
"AHHH Crap my monitor has got a hold of my arm!!!"
"Don't worry Hon I'll get the Camera!!"
LoL!

Thanks for the compliments on the photos.. the second thing that i said when i got bit was "Jess, get the camera". There have been a few other situations where I WANTED to get a photo taken, but family was too interested in getting me to the hospital to close up the hole in my face then to take photos.
Adam: I just get bit because i keep grumpy snakes.. I love my little male white lipped python :P. Lately my big coastal has been really nippy too.
Beaner: That happened to me too.. first time i used the temp gun ended up with me wrestling it out of the lizards mouth :)
Anyways, I got a second photo of the bite, its a little closer.
EDIT: I also enjoy seeing bite photos, thats why i took the extra time to take pics to share :) It can serve as a reminder to everyone what can happen if you aren't careful. I'd hate to imagine what the bite would have been like if it was a water monitor or something with mean angry teeth :)
cheers everyone,
Justin

Thats not a bite, it is nothing more then a heavy clothes pin.
Good thing you do not keep V. salvadori like myself.

Even though I know you can't sell me one are you breeding your Savs? If so how is it? I really want to breed Beaner before he gets to old he's almost 5 so I don't know how much longer he's going to be a stud for, and I'm sure he'd produce some nice babies, and I'd love to start with a baby Sav. He was 12-13" when I got him w/o tail so I never got to raise one from scratch and I'd really like to raise one of his so when he's gone I'd still have his son or daughter since he is what got me into reptiles.

I've not done anything to stimulate breeding them as of yet. as i said originally, she was fairly unwell and I wanted to get her better and put on some weight.
Also, Monitors are CITES listed species, so It would be EXTREMELY expensive to get one to you legally, if by chance i was even able to get eggs from them.

oh.. I'd also like to direct you to www.themonitorspot.com .. it has some good information on breeding savs. Also, i'd definatly recommend buying the savannah book by Ravi T. and Daniel B. well worth the $9.99

Ow, what a nip, lol, i've been nipped
Justin, be thankful she didnt get ahold of a finger, or a toe. Ive had ones roughly that size grab my fingers and damn near break them. They can really crush with those jaws.

you guys are all sick and demented..
where do i sign up?
in all honesty, if this lizard spots something moving, she's on it like a .. monitor to food. i never thought a savannah would literally leap off their basking spot to try to bite me. this lizard is Nuts.. but i love it. i just gotta change my thinking about savs :P
cheers
