We started breeding our own rats about 7 months ago and it's going
well. We only have one male and 3 females. We haven't taken time
to play with them much but lately since I'm at home all the time I
have been working with them. It's going well. I've been reading a
lot about how wonderful they can be as pets. We have only one brown
rat. She's female the rest albino. She finally gave us a beatiful
litter of gray and black babies with pure white tummies. Well we
picked out one to keep as a pet. Inside to see how it worked out.
Well he didn't acclimate well so we put another in with him till
they got a little older. Those two were my favorites and we are
going to keep the grey female for a breeder. I went to check on
them last night in their climate controlled storage shed and the 2
little ones had escaped. I was scared to death that they were going
to infest our house and shed with rats. Well I put some food on the
floor and went back to feeding the big rats their veggies fruits and
food. (This is horrible and I'm sorry) I stepped to turn to the
right and felt a crunch. The little black one that was taking to me
so well came right out in the middle to me and I didn't want to look
down. I couldn't do anything but sit in the floor and bawl. ( It
had been a terrible day.) I lost one of my favorites and the gray
was missing. Walk let Martin handle the black one and I was closing
up everything and I looked down and the little grey was just looking
up at me. I slowly moved to her and handed her food and she crawled
in my hand. She had been so skittish before. At first I put her in
with her brother and sisters but she wasn't eating or moving well.
I took her in the house with me and made her a fleece home in lots
of bedding with a heating pad under it. She stayed in my bra (hee
hee) till I went to bed because when she was in her cage just
shivering. She's dead asleep in my shirt in her very own felt crown
royal bad. She crawls onto my hand when I reach in and doesn't try
to get away at all. I lost one but god intervened and let me redeem
myself. Needless to say she'll be an inside pet from now on. I
thought you all might like to know about that. I love that little
critter and it really seems she loves me back. What are good treats
for them? I feed them fruit and greens twice a week as well as dog
food. What else could I use for a treat? Do any of you know where
to send me for information for keeping rats as pets and also for
keeping rats as reptile feeders. I have one of those pet store
books but they only go so far. Sorry for the novel.
One more question. I don't know how any of this works with breeding
rats and snakes. Do I need to get new males to breed the females we
are keeping or do I just use the male sibling? May be a stupid
question but I don't wanna screw up lol. LOve to you all!!!
