Why you want to keep him in high humidity

whats considered high humidity anyways?

savannahs do require a certain degree of humidity, being bone dry is very bad for them. But, too humid is probably just as bad.

i dont want to keep him in a high humidity environment. my savanna is about a little less of a foot long and i have him in a rubbermaid about the same size of a 40 gallon breeder tank. i used the coconut block that u put in the water and expands. im not sure if i describe it right but once it expands it turned out to be a good substrate. my problem is that everytime i put the lid on the rubbermaid the humidity goes over 90 and most of the time my hygrometer reads high. i have a digital thermometer with hygrometer. i put a lot of holes in the rubbermaid to let it out but i still have no luck on keeping the humidity down. thats the reason i ask if its bad for them. i have snakes and i know keeping them in a humidity over 80 can possibly give them respiratory infection. im not sure bout monitors though. thanks for the help

Yea thats deffinetly way to high. But its because you're using ecoearth (the brick) and its used to keep very high humidity. Id suggest taking it all out and either using mulch, or preferably for your monitors well being, dirt. You can get dirt from outside, just make sure its not from a farm land where there can be pesticides or anything like that.

thanks bartman. is it possible for me to dry out the ecoearth as much as i can to keep my humidity low? just a thought. also is it ok if i get dirt from the garden store. i dont think i can get dirt anywhere else.

Go outside with a bucket, and a shovel and dig up some dirt. It's the best possible substrate for your savannah. Toss out all the petstore stuff and just use dirt. The dirt should be dry on the surface and moister as the dirt deepens.

I use dirt and the humidity is between 40 and 50 in my tank ... below 40 my Sav gets cranky and above 50 he stops eating ... ussually around 45 and he is good.

the other part of your problem will be the rubbermaid. Do you have basking lights or are you keeping the monitor as you would a snake?

i have a flood light inside the rubbermaid. the rubbermaid is about 1 foot and a half high so i put a light clamp inside that is protected by some chicken wires. i change the substrate with soil and its better humidity wise. my savannah since i got him have eaten 2 pinkies and some crickets. i think he stop eating crickets beacause he doesnt pay attention to them anymore. tomorrow im going to feed him again with some worms.

What's the surface temperature under the basking light?

its around 115 % basking and the air ambient is around 90 hot side and 80 in the cool side. he has a small cave that gets 75. i have a water bowl in this cage that can fit him if he wants to soak.
