Hey
I have an tank thats home made and I need a lid that fruit flies cant get out off. Any suggestions? The size of the tank is around 15 gallons.

Would a cheese cloth type material work? It would let in air but not let the fruit flys out. Just a thought .

Any grocery store should carry cheesecloth as well. Look in the baking section.

I would just use fine mesh screen. I would not trust cheese cloth to hold anything.

Well the only mesh that I can find is the ones used for your windows. But they seem to get out

just a light piece of material like cotton or something in a light colour and put a piece of string around it fasten it to the cage
What are you housing in the tank?

ok you could make a wood frame fasten a light(white) piece of cotton to it and you have a lid
2 pieces of screen placed together wont work tried and failed(lots of fruit flies everywhere.
Kris
Also when you buy a culture they usually have a cloth top so they dont get out

well, I hatched baby mantis before which required fruit flies and I just got some garden clothe which is mainly for strawberries so the berries dont get bugs eating at them and for them not to rot. It is porous so it kept the flies in and the air can circulate. Try it, its about $10.00 a 20 or more foot roll.

I have used scientific grade steel mesh before. The holes are only 6/1000" in diameter but still gives 60% open air. Amazing stuff. Just expensive.
