No snakes over 24 inches. No reptiles over 12". No more than two of each, and no venomous.

pardon?

how the hell can they have a law stating that you cant keep a snake over 24inches.. yet these pet stores are selling snakes that hatch at nearly 24 inches.. its ridiculous.. oh wait.. i forgot.. according to the bylaws... the london pet stores sell burms for out of town buyers..
just like here in ottawa.. all the bigger snakes for sale in pet shops are for out of town buyers..
silly me...

and i dont care what people keep or if they break the law or not.. most laws are ridiculous to a certain extent on how they work..
when i move to london in june.. ive already broken the law with my 4 snakes i am bringing.. plus spiders..
only legal animal is the green anole..
haha..

Most Animal By-laws do NOT apply to petshops. I know here in Sudbury the only laws in concerns to snakes and lizards (nothing else is listed as an animal, so technically you CAN keep it because it's not listed as prohibited) states

"Snakes, Lizards
27. Despite Section 22, a person may keep on a dwelling unit and premises in the City, not more than two non-venomous snakes and two non-venomous lizards provided same are housed in and kept in an escape proof enclosure."

Which, if plainly read, means you can keep ANY size snake or lizard, and depending on the # of adult persons in your household, many many of those as "A PERSON" *giggles*

The LONDON bylaw states:

"Part 12 CLASS 5 ANIMALS
12.2 Maximum - 2 animals - in one dwelling
No person shall keep more than 2 Class 5 animals in any dwelling unit or on any premises

12.3 Snake - non-venomous - over 24 inches - prohibited
No person is permitted to keep a non-venomous snake that exceeds an overall length of 60.96 centimetres (24 inches).

12.4 Lizard - non-venomous lizard - over 12 inches - prohibited
No person shall keep a non-venomous lizard that exceeds an overall length of 30-48 centimetres (12 inches).

Yes, the laws here in London and St. Thomas are ridiculous.

The plus side is that the enforcement is virtually non-existent.

Even with complaints about animals they're not likely to move on it unless someone gets hurt.

We found that out from dealing with animal control over aggressive dogs.

Still, creating laws that don't really do anything except comfort a few phobic people is a waste of money.
