uhhh Hyena are some vile animals. It's not like they cant bring down there own prey. But I love how the male lion just threw his weight around.
But thats the way of the wild.
Edit: but the lion does the same to wild dogs, cheetah, and any other animal it can over power for a meal.

Sweet it's rare to se a male in an all out run. It's funny it the daytime scence did you see the hyena and lion run right past that jackel? It didn't even move it was probably terrified.

BAZ:
Very interesting, watching nature take charge and letting instinct control the next day of life. I am a big fan of nature videos, and the techno helped as well :)
Thank for sharing.

For cat owners.....
The funny thing is.... if you have multiple house cats, they stalk each other in the very same way as the male chased down that hyena. My cats play fight all the time.. and the motions they go through are strikingly similar. Little Thumbelina will chase down Roxy, wrap both paws around her from behnd, and then bite Roxy's neck. Then the rolling begins, and Thumbelina will kick with her hind legs in the exact way that the male lion was kicking and clawing with his when he had the hyena down in the last shot.
Our little kitties have a lot in common with the big cats. I am grateful that house cats generally top out around 15 pounds. They are capable of doing plenty of damage as it is.

Wow, that was great. I could see a whole channel dedicated to nature footage with a musical background (and good selection of songs there too!). Hey, I'd watch it! Beats the heck out of what MTV is putting out these days...

I don't know if any of you have seen the documentary where that footage was taken from but the story was, that group of female lions was alone (no male) and took out that wildebeast. The hyenas stole the carcass as you saw in the video. In one scene you saw a female sort of sitting down, blood on her face, snarling at the hyenas. Well it turned out the hyenas killed her. The male returned to find the female killed and flipped out. He chased down the dominant female from the hyenas the next day and killed her (like in the video). I seem to recall that he continued to kill the other dominants but I can't remember. Anyway, it was documented as a good example of animal revenge. The male purposely set out to kill the hyenas that killed one of his pride. I saw the documentary twice but was never able to find it again. The whole thing is both graphic and awesome at the same time. It gave me so much more respect for lions. (Not the revenge part but the sheer power.)
Anyway, that's how I remember it.

I think you're right. But I remember there being two "versions". In one, you see the hyenas attacking the lions but they don't kill the female. A young male lion kills her after she is mortally wounded and her pride has to leave her behind. In the other the lioness is killed and the male goes crazy-mad. This second version might have been a "revenge" show with shorter clips of different animals. I haven't seen this second one in a really long time. It's been so long I might have the facts all messed up
I don't usually like the lion episodes of wilderness shows but that Wild Discovery one was REALLY good.

Found this info on the net thought people might like to see what it was called actually and also when around and where it took place. I think I might just get the video. I think it is awesome.
Eternal Enemies: Lions And Hyenas [VHS] (1992)
In Northern Botswana, lions and hyenas clash in an intense feud where the hyena matriarch and a male lion fight to the death. One of nature's most savage conflicts is captured by incredible photography.

a very good display of instinct and power indeed. When the hyenas stuck together the lions had no chance. But when it was 1 on 1 the lion prevailed. Kind of ironic? LOL the message i get is............. their is no honor among theivs lol. It works on so many levels..............
Lions win hands down in a one on one fight with hyenas, but against a pack of hyenas banding together the hyenas take it. I have seen a few documentaries on this subject and they said hyenas are the only ones that will take a kill from lions. Interesting since a male will kill his own cubs for trying to get in when it is his time to eat!

Ive always thought that about my 2 cats. One of mine is a similar color to a lioness color, so its amazing to just watch her. Its like having a mini lion around :D
the link is dead :( anywhere eles we can view it?

Yes... you really can see this behaviour in the movie. The lioness at one point is on top of the log, baring her teeth, while the pack of hyenas is down below.
If I remember correctly, hyenas may actually exert more pressure from a bite than a lion, though my memory may be flawed.
The lions truly have the weight advantage, and let's not forget about those incredible claws.

THAT WAS COOL !!! i watched it a few times !!
I remember seeing that footage before too on the Discovery Channel.
The hyena kept pestering the lion from a distance and the lion got up, chased it down and crushed the hyena's skull.
I saw another Discovery program (don't know if it was the same as this footage) where a group of lionesses ran right into the territory of another pride of females. All ran back except for one--the females surrounded her and killed her. It was intense.

Wow, that was very interesting to watch.
