I am disturbed by this statement....
""We have to discourage the trade in our province of wildlife or plants that are rare or threatened in other countries," Lucyshyn said."
I have to disagree tih this. Look at how a number of rare and or endangered species are THRIVING in captivity... most notably dart frogs. I know for a fact that there will be (and maybe already are) naturally occurring dart frog morphs in the hobby that no longer exist in the wild due to deforestation. To me..... the angle taken by "Lucyshyn" is completely on the wrong page. *Responsible* hobbyists are not the problem. Loss of habitat is the problem for a majority of the animals that are in the hobby.
Pythons....... they could have been childrens pythons for all we know.
so that wasn`t me........
But minnow what do you mean by what was he thinking - just out of curiosity?
Cindy
I assumed he would know the laws about owning boas and pythons in Saskatchewan.
Being charged and possibly losing the animals will be very costly to him.......hence what was he thinking?
According to Saskatchewan conservation officers, the man was caught with 12 pythons, three boa constrictors and an alligator.
I din't think it was you ydnic. On the CTV newspage it gives the fellow's name. (and I was quite sure you are female) lol
Carol
heheh
yeah - at least the animals weren`t put down

Sounds like some more snakes for the Good Folks at Reptile World (as per the article?). Mark
On the other hand.........I think Saskatchewan laws really suck. I would love to have a ball python but even though they don't get huge they are illegal to own just because they are pythons.
Also, I thought it was legal to own alligators in Saskatchewan. (but not in the City of Saskatoon because of a local bylaw)
Carol
yes I read that the laws stated that crocodilians are legal?

Where I live I'm not supposed to have Ball Pythons but I keep them anyway. What was that guy thinking, most likely the same thing I am.
Why should some ignorant government official be able to tell me what I can and can't own in my own home as long as it isn't a danger to anyone else? I mean sure certain extremes such as Venomous and the large boid breeds; I can understand why they do restrict them. But I mean common to restrict a Ball python or Children’s Python, who could those hurt?
Also the news reports states nothing about neglect, only that he had them. It doesn't even state what species he had, for all we know he had sand boas and children’s pythons. The report is again just trying to sensationalize the fact that he had reptiles at all. So really I see nothing wrong, the guy most likely was a responsible keeper like most of us who just got nailed to the wall by the government.
Yes.. we, as good Canadian/Americans should do whatever the government thinks is in our best interest. If they say that boas and pythons or gechos are dangerous to the public and that no one should keep them, well we should not keep them....Besides owning a pet/reptile might take up time that could be spent at Casinos and use up our money that could be spent on ciggaretts and alcohol...be nice and listen, it's for our own good and they would know..LMAO
Be Cool and be Quiet
Vengeance, keeping a ball python in Toronto and having 12 pythons, three boa constrictors and an alligator in small town Saskatchewan is totally different. The authorities in small communities get wind of anything unusual going on much more than they would in a city.
And Chas*e, I don't agree with the laws either but I guess if we choose to not comply we have to be ready to accept the consequences.
Carol
yup - thats how i feel........
and I live here thats why I love this site I can always get a little taste of what I can`t have
'keeping a ball python in Toronto and having 12 pythons, three boa constrictors and an alligator in small town Saskatchewan is totally different. '
not really - its still some one having something the legal gods think is inappropreate and t would be treated the smae way - well maybe a little less sensationalism
but if its illegal - it doesn`t matter if you have 100 or 1 its still illegal
small town sask is no different from toronto - it all comes down to being able to keep your trap shut

The alligator was taken because it wasn't legally imported into the province.
The pythons were all fairly big, most of them were retics.
$2100 is just a fraction of what he could have been charged. He could have been charged $5000 for every snake he illegally posessed, and $5000 for every animal illegally trafficked (in this case, all of them).

I don't live in Toronto anymore, I just keep my location at Toronto for 2 reasons,
1) Most people know where Toronto is
2) I live in a small town now and since it is illegal for me to kepp Ball Pythons I don't need anyone knowing where I live.
Also how is it Diffrent? I have 5 snakes, 2 Dogs, 3 Turtles and a fish. What do you think the newspaper would say about me? Go look at that story again, I'm sure they could and would say the exact same thing about me except instead of an aligator I would have HUGE turtles and Vicous Dogs. If I was discovered as keeping these animals, the same thing would happen, I'd be fined. Ryan seems to have clarified a few things for us, but without the information provided by Ryan that guy could be no diffrent then me.
The only difference I meant was that you can be more anonomous in a large city. People in a small town seem to mind other people's business more than they do in a city.

Don't you love it when uneducated politicians dictate policy?
Check out this old news story... Southern California politicians wanted to ban styrofoam cups becuase they contained the potentially dangerous chemical Dihydrogen monoxide... little did they know that this is the chemical name for water. I love how they tried to blame it on the paralegal. Idiots. This is a prime example of politicians making law regarding things they know nothing about. This is much like any herp ban.. and many could argue the pit bull ban. But we won't go there :)
Here is the link to the water bannng article:

The one unfortunate thing about this is....
Many of us Saskatchewaners, were just talking about once again trying to have the laws changed to allow the keeping of some pythons and boas.
But when they bust a guy who has lots of big retics, and scrubs and an alligator - they forget about the people with ball pythons, and keep thinking "big and dangerous".
And for the record, small town Saskatchewan is wayyy different than any place in Canada. Everyone knows everyone business, moving to a small town with big snakes and things would be very difficult to hide.

Exotic laws often go too far. Politicians seem to pass blanket legislation so they only have to deal with a subject once. Ban everyhing, ignore the details and then move on and forget about it. They allow somne discussion but don't care about the pros and cons they do what they plan to do anyway. If you think that your voice is ever heard on an issue then you are only fooling yourself.
Fascism is alive and well in Canada and the lowly municipal politicians are the biggest practitioners.
Ryan I hate to disagree with you here - but growing up in small town sask I believe I know a thing or two
Seriously it come down to keeping you mouth shut as I said earlier
No one can know or find out you business if you keep it to yourself
For example if I had a tatoo on my chest and never leifted my shirt - who is going to know that it is there ?
Its the same thing if i had an alligator in my basement and never brought my neighbor or friends into my basement
no one will know what I have in my basement but me - whether i`m in newyork or delisle -

Moving 15 big python cages into a house gets peoples attention, and in a small town, even small things become the topic of discussion down on coffee row for days. Small towns are way different than cities, don't kid yourself.
And you don't need to lift your shirt for us to know about the tattoo on your chest, the shirt your wearing in the picture in your gallery doesn't cover it :)
Ryan
nice to see you remember my picture ...
