Hi people,
i have been posting quite alot lately about begginner snakes :owhen someone said that carpet pythons might be an idea...
I have a few questions about this snake...
1.how big do carpet pythons grow and are jungles the smallest(especially jungle carpet pythons)?
2.are they good feeders?
3.are they very strong?
4.do they have a good temprament?
5.are they good starter snakes for someone that has never owned a snake(mum owned bci when little and she will be helping if she likes it or not:) )
6.are they easy to take care of and forgiving?
Thanks for all your help

Coastal Carpet Pythons are the largest of all the carpet python species. They can reach 8 to 9 feet with record being 14 feet long. Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons are the smallest and usually max out at around 4-6 feet with the record being 7 *I think*.
Jungles will get around 5-7 usually.

Most Jungles are very good eaters and have a great feeding response but switching them to rats can be a pain with some jungles and others its not a problem at all.

All carpet pythons are strong and all can climb pretty well so they need to be strong to climb around like they love to do. There temperament is like any other snake really. Nippy when young and soon grow out of it. It all depends on the snake really.

I got a ball pythons for my first snake followed by a pueblan milksnake and then a Irian Jaya and he is by far my favorite snake. As long as you read all you can read you should be o.k with a jungle as your first snake. They arnt your typical ball python that doesnt move much so be ready for a change because these guys can be active, cute, nippy as young, and very interesting to own.

1) Yea what Brad said
2) I’ve seen some adults that will only eat mice, 2 others that take rats NO problem, and my guy that I have (still small) takes down rats like he doesn’t know of anything else
3) Yea they are climbers, so they are stronger, relatively, then other snakes of the same size id say. I’ve seen some jungles support almost half their body in mid air.
4) The previous owner of my jcp said it was nippy, it was a baby, I got it hope though and since the first day it hasn’t even hissed/struck or anything. All the jungles I’ve dealt with, about 5 or 6, have all been completely calm but again it varies
5) Yea I’d for sure say it’s a great starter snake. Maybe needs a bit more requirement then others as they are arboreal, but there feeding response, temperament, and care would make them great in my books. I owned balls first, then corns, and then a jungle. The jungle is great!
6) Well they shouldn’t need to be forgiving. As long as you read all you can read including books if you can as they are usually better, and get all the requirements down pat BEFORE you buy the snake, then he should live a perfect life.

Good luck with whatever you end up choosing!

Carpets are awesome first snakes. Do your research before you get one and you'll be fine. Honestly, I put as much effort into my carpets as I did when I had a corn snake. They're easy. Hatchlings can be nippy but it's doesn't hurt and don't let it turn you off. Irian Jayas are the smallest carpet and a personal favourite.

ok thanks for your help people.
You say that they are climbing snakes so should i get a HIGH cage instead of a LONG cage, say 5.5ft high and 2 foot long and 2 foot depth for a irian jaya?
Thanks for all your help

For an Irian Jaya i wouldnt go smaller than a 3x2 cage and you can make it as high as you want because they will indeed climb is given the chance. 4x2 would be better for an IJ but i know people that use 3x2 with no problems at all unless you get a giant that max out over 6' lol

Im building a 4x2x2 for my jungle. Id be more then okay with a 3x2x2, but the way its fitting along with some other tanks that will be stacked on it, it needs to be that specific size.

Jungle carpets are great snakes but I would give you one word of advice that hasn't been mentioned, start feeding them rats as soon as possible and feed them outside there cage in a designated area that they only have access to when its feeding time. They have such a good feeding responce that if they get used to eating in there cage they may start striking at your hand if its close to feeding time and they think its food. Mine got me once like that, I started feeding in the tub and never had a problem since.
