The only way to accurately tell (with most snakes) is to probe them (internally, inserting a probe into their cloacal opening) If you don't want to go to the vet, you could always get someone who knows what they're doing to show you how.

What city do you live in? Maybe someone here knows someone in your city that can sex it for you...

Some tips are valid for almost all snakes.
Females have smaller spurs (sometimes not visible at all).
Females have a higher scale count around the body.
Of course, this means little without probing.

But make sure whoever is probing it has experience in doing this for it could create alot more problems then the amount of money your saving from not going to the vets.
It also depends on the type of snake.....like jimmy said you can sometimes check with sppurs or scale counts but you cant use that as a rule....... in some snakes like the Viper Boa for example females will have NO spurs whatsoever and males will or in other snakes like the Vine Snake the male will be alot smaller then the female.....but the only way to be certain is to have them probed.

Another point... As odd as it might seem, I've seen inexperienced people probe snakes in the wrong direction which is both shocking and humourous for about 5 seconds.
The hemipenes are in the tail, so when you enter the cloaca, you're penetrating the two pockets within the tail.... NOT the other way, which essentially gives them an enema.. plus they all sex males that way, not happy males either :)
