View Full Version : breeding weights
Hi all, i have been looking at a few care sheets about leo breeding and they all say the female should be different weights. Some sheets say they should be around 50g while others say they should be around 80g.What do you guys consider to be a good breeding weight for a female?
Thanks for any replies,

I'd say 50g is a minimum weight. Even then it might be hard on the female. When they're that size they are still growing, so if you're breeding them, it will more than likely stunt their growth. You run a higher risk of more infertile eggs also.
IMO, I would wait till they were a bit heavier, around 70-80 grams. but again that is just my opinion.

I personally think the whole weight thing is, to be nice, stupid:) My reasons for this are because there are too many other factors that come in to play. Let's say you have a 9" female and an 7" female. Both are 55 grams. This doesn't mean that they are ready to breed, since the longer one would be much skinnier than the shorter one. Hope that makes sense:)
Anyways, go by appearance not by a scale. If you have females old enough (10 months+) and they have a good body size, thick tails and are regular eaters and shedders, then I'd say they are ready to breed. The most important thing is that they are healthy and active. This way you produce healthy active babies:D
Good question, btw!

That's very good for geckos of that age and length. You should have no problem breeding them this spring:D
