Indecency, vulgarity, obscenity - - these are strictly confined to man; he invented them. Among the higher animals there is no trace of them. They hide nothing. They are not ashamed. - Mark Twain

"Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself."
- Froude

THIS is by far my ultimate f a v o r i t e:

"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth" ~ "The Outermost House" - Henry Beston

"LOVE is the answer"....

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you and ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of this journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb. - Sir Winston Churchill

Attitude, rather than disposition is more definitive of serpent behavior. From the moment they emerge into this world until they complete their life cycle, their attitude is "Don't tread on me. The risk that you will die from a terrorist attack is, on average, bundled in with such hazards as bee stings and lightning. There would need to be an attack with the magnitude of Sept 11 every second month just to compare with auto accident fatalities. Other dangers might be higher on our minds as well, like the fact that in June, America suffered its worst single month of tornadoes on record - a widely predicted outcome of global climate change. Some people feel a sense of urgency about these ongoing crises; we know those people as 'paranoids.' Then there are those who promote a perpetual fear of the invisible, unpredictable and largely unstoppable threat of terrorism. Those are the people that we call 'patriots.'

"It is curious how much difficulty we have with the idea of animism - that we live in a context with what exists on the planet and must therefore deal with that relationship. On the other hand, we are eager to pretend that we have an animated relationship with inanimate machinery of our own fabrication. What's more, we pretend that we are the subservient half of this relationship. This is a bit like having an emotional and sexual relationhip with an inflatable doll."
