Woman Auctions Father's Ghost on eBay

HOBART, Ind. - A woman's effort to assuage her 6-year-old son's fears of his grandfather's ghost by selling it on eBay has drawn more than 34 bids with a top offer of $78.

Mary Anderson said she placed her father's "ghost" on the online auction site after her son, Collin, said he was afraid the ghost would return someday. Anderson said Collin has avoided going anywhere in the house alone since his grandfather died last year.

In a description titled "This isn't a joke," Anderson told Collin's story on eBay:

"I always thought it was just normal kid fears until a few months ago he told me why he was so scared. He told me 'Grandpa died here, and he was mean. His ghost is still around here!'"

Lest the boy's fears scare off potential bidders, Anderson added, "My dad was the sweetest most caring man you'd ever meet."

Some of the prospective buyers have posted their own messages.

"Your story brought tears to my eyes," one bidder said. "I just wonder how this will turn out for your son. I'm sure his Grandfather loved him very much."

Anderson also put her father's metal walking cane up for auction so she would have something to actually send the winning bidder. The proceeds from the auction will go to buy Collin a special present, she said.

Anderson makes one special request of the winner bidder: "I would like to ask you to write a letter after you've received the cane (and the ghost) to my son letting him know that he's there with you and you're getting along great."

The bidding is due to close Monday afternoon.

A message left with San Jose, Calif.-based eBay Inc. in San Jose, Calif., was not immediately returned Saturday.

And any numpty could pretend that someone bought the ghost and cane and send a letter to themselves. Only way I would believe it is if they were like, must pick up ghost in person. This is ridiculous and anyone who is this gullable, should send me an email cause I have some stories I would like to share with them.

My favourite eBay auction ever was the one for some guy's hate... he promised to blame all misfortune in his life on you, curse your name, and hate you as much as possible if you won his auction.

That is absolutely insane. I could use $100, should I put up my late hamster, Button's ghost for sale? And second of all, say this wasn't a hoax...why on Earth would you want to purchase the cane of someone's dead Grandfather, let alone his ghost!? I don't know about you guys, but my house is already cold enough!
That's crazy...

Current bid: US $14,999.99

From the eBay Unpaid Item Policy
Buyers automatically enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller if they win the auction-style listing or use the Buy It Now feature. eBay's Unpaid Item policy requires buyers to pay for the items that they commit to purchase.

....the people who are bidding on the ghost don't seem to have good records or no record of buying anything in the first place. Maybe it's a group who are hoaxing it up even more to try and get someone else to lay down a wad of money.....

Not sure of the legalities involved but it sure looks like the woman is really in the clear on that account. A perfect swindle and obviously the person who bid all that money is probably in a position where they can afford to pay it ie, more money than brains. That woman is going to have a nice christmas, probably with visions of other swindles dancing in her head.

I think the funniest auctions were the one of the biker selling his ex-wife's dress and the guy selling his ex-girl friend's clothes after she left him for one of his friend.

Oh and the one who sold a glass jar filled with soiled air (from all the metro stations in england or something) he would open the jar a little to allow air into it...)

Well I will put a fart in a jar auction if it continues, any potential bidders here? ;) lmao

If you check into it all bids have been cancelled the son made up the story and put the cane up for auction, mom has since cancelled all bids citing that is was an unauthorized stunt her son did as a joke.

I hadn't checked back on it but not surprised. I guess that there are a few people around that have some kind of concience after all. Maybe she ought to keep an eye on that boy before he gets them both into trouble.
