I have had Thor for a little over 3 weeks now. I did not handle him for the first week i had him. He has eaten every week, this week he moved up to adult mice w/ no problem (except he missed on the first attempt and bit himself, no damage). I give him 2 days rest after he eats before i handle him.

enough background info, heres the question. Last week he was moving around the cage just fine and let me handle him with no problem. However, this week (even before i fed him) he seems to be less comfortable when i hold him, suddenly stops in his tank when he sees me moving in my room(he will stay completely still for a few minutes), and just appears very cautious.

What could be the reason for this? Could he be acting this way because of stress, or since it is getting close to the time he should shed(he has not shed yet in my possession and he was playing in his water bowl a few days ago)so he is acting different. Just worried. any advice or info would help. Thanks

It could be that hes shedding, but all of my ball pythons are very paranoid you could say. I think its just in general there attitude. Shouldnt be a problem as long as hes eating.

When I had a bp, i also experienced something like this. It would be coming out of it's hide and then I would walk past it's enclosure. It would then freeze and move back into the hide very slowly. They definitely get better with time.

My BP's act that way all the time. They always shed perfect and never miss a meal. I would'nt worry.

i wouldnt be geting stessed about this. he is fine. if you get stessed like this over what is happening i can only imagine what you will be thinking when he goes off feed for months at a time. No worries though, he knows what he is doing, he's just being a snake.

thanks for the input. i know i worry a lot. i just had a bad experience once and it almost discouraged me from keeping snakes. I just want the snake to be as happy as possible, ya know.

What kind of cage do you have him in? How big is he? If a snake is in a glass aquarium and/or the cage is too big he might feel insecure. This effects babies the most. Try a rubber maid, smaller cage, or both.
