Hi there folks:

Was checking in on my collection and looked over at the ETBs and saw something I seem to miss a few times and tonight I got a chance to get pics.

This is PROSERPINE, one of my late 2003 baby females.

She was in shed and let me get a few photos of her doing her thing.

Absolutely Stunning Tony!

I swear bud...if it wasn't for that state of the Art security system, and those dumb dogs (whom prefer the taste of human as opposed to steak!) i'd be a very happy man!

Nice pics!... How do you guys heat those Rubbermaids?

BOAS_N_PYTHONS

SLIPKNOT:

They are heated with snake room temperatures and each cage also has its own heat either human heat pad or heat tape. Although I converted everything from human heat pads to heat tape now, but human heats pads worked for years for me.

Thank you... so if I got an ATB and housed it in a Rubbermaid, I could just use a human heat pad under one side right?

Would that also work for an ETB?

Just a few more Qs...

Why 2 water bowls?

and

No hides?

...hope I'm not being annoying, I just want to make sure that I do everything right because I'm probably gonna get an ATB.

SLIPKNOT:

With high humidity boids I always use 2 water bowls, both are functional for drinking but 1 is always near the heat source. With that being said the idea and purpose is that that 1 water bowl on a heat source creates constant humidty.

With ETBs (Emerald Tree Boas) they require no hides, provide a few branches at different levels in the cages and some dark areas or plants, my case plastic plants and they do fine seeking what fits there needs for security and shelter. This will work with ATBs as well but a few hide boxes won' t hurt and would give them more options.

Don' t worry about asking informative questions. Either I or another member will help out if we can. Being educated before getting a pet is the proper method, it provides you peace of mind and gives them the best possible life in your care.

All right, cool... I think I know what I'm going to do as far as caging. I'll get pics once I have the cage set up (sometime within a few months hopefully), I'm planning on setting it up a week early to test humidity and temps, is that long enough?

Thanks!:D

SLIPKNOT:

That is a good idea, pretesting your cage parameters to match the pet you plan on caring for is good step to proper care indeed. Test many options from day/night temp differences, location of the cage and where it is near temp drops/highs like saying near windows or open door areas and so on. How humidty changes all these parameters and so on as well.

This ATB will if it could would say thanks for all the pre-care you put into it. :)

SLIPKNOT:

Overall the design looks good and looks ready to be tested.

Only thing I would change is the stick on thermometers. I don' t trust them and they aren' t accurate to temps your looking for. They tell you temps in the zone area but are not accurate for reptile hot areas.

Pick up an decent priced unit like these or others....at Radio Shack or places with electronics, going cheap on this item can endanger your reptiles.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v520/BOAS_N_PYTHONS/09%20-%20CAGES%20and%20EQUIPMENT/thermometers000.jpg

Everything else in cage is decent and works fine.

Goodluck.

Cool... are those digital ones water-proof?

And that is the set-up I will use while it is a baby, I am going to build a cage for when it is an adult... ;)

SLIPKNOT:

No these are not waterproof in the sense that if they fall in a water bowl, they would be damaged.

But if you get the ones with extension probes like the one in my photo on the left then place the probe near the heat source and keep the unit sitting outside the cage or hang it somewhere on a wall inside the cage, I do it like that.

But I also use a heat gun and check on my collection in the morning and at bedtime with this.

Has a lasar sight on it to know where temp reading is.

There are cheaper ones at:

I meant as far as being able to handle the daily mistings of a Tree Boa... I'll look into the temp guns. :)

should those hide boxes not be elevated off of the ground?

slipknot i recommend you get and indoor/outdoor digital thermometer combined with a digital hygrometer. you would still get it at radioshack , zellers, walmart, rona, etc. It doesn't make it cost too much more but then you can get accurate readings on your temps and humidity. Thats what i use for my cham, and it really helps. I know right away if i need to spray or not.
