Has anyone else noticed that the Canadian Geese this year are flying North instead of South? Do they know something we don't?
I don't think they ever fly directly south... they just go from pond to pond to lake and so on. I see flocks going north all the time too.

I noticed that years ago and it sort of bothered me
All it took was a nice chat with a "goose chaser", someone who studied the migration of geese and ducks. According to him, they don't fly directly south - no getting off the ground and head to the palm trees. Most migrating bird species (about 80%) use specifec routes called flyways. There are 4 of them in North America. The chances are the geese flying north are really just heading to the nearest 'on ramp' to the flyway, and will head south with the rest of the flocks.
On the other hand, if there's any truth to global warming and the geese already figured it out, we're in big trouble.

Take it from someone in Georgia, most of the Canadian Geese are already here. They are so thick that you could hunt them with a golf club!

Interesting, for me that big V of birds flying south allways signaled to me the start of Winter, seeing them head North was confusing, was wondering if they knew something we dind't :P

Must be fun in your area at migration time. .. .... thousands of geese flying overhead, non-stop honking. Do they drop their calling cards as they fly too? LOL

I live in the extreme southwestern part of Ontario which basically is as far south as you can get without having a zip code instead of a postal code and I have noticed small flocks of ducks in the lake but geese haven't flown over for quite awhile. I used to be big on goose hunting so I always notice when I hear them flying around. There aren't alot of birds around period actually.
It has been mild so far but the fact that the birds have cleared out so quickly makes me wonder if a hard winter is coming.
