I got my first darts over a year ago and did tons of research as to what darts I should attempt to keep for the first time. the suggestions I got as a good first dart were the auratas, terribillis and the azures. They are all some of the larger ones (so its not such a challenge to ensure you always have a food supply) and they are quite hardy. I ended up getting 4 terribillis because they do well in colonies and were relatively inexpensive compared to the others (about $70 each while the azures are about $100 each). The terribillis when young climb a little but as they got older they stopped climbing and stick to the bottem of the tank. I am really happy with these guys as they are very bold and aren't shy when someone approaches the tank. They have gotten so used to flies coming when I sit next to the tank that I notice they all gravitate towards the side I sit at everytime someone site down.
they are also starting to sing ... which is really neat to watch. I think they live aprx 10+ years provided they are kept in decent housing.
