rescueing reps

i dont know where i should put this but here it goes...

i wanna rescue my reps now... adopt and stuff... that way at least they can have a partially good life...

but reptile rescue website in ontario isnt working...

so is there any other rep resc. places in on.., gta perferable..

does the ospca have reps... any websites or names of places is great... either post or pm..

The SPCA is not reptile friendly, and generally works against keeping reptiles as pets. You could put your name in to them in case they get anything in, but generally they don't want to encourage reptile ownership. The cooperation varies from branch to branch.

Just a thougth for a while my kids and I were taking in rescues, I have since put a stop too it (time consuming and $$$ consuming not too mention the potential risk to my other herps, as were in a 2 bdrm apt, so not alot of room to quarentine). Just keep in mind taking in rescues can be quite rewarding as well as expensive as you are not getting an animal that has been properly cared for. They can come in with all sorts of parasites and resp. infections ect ect... Just someting too keep in mind. It took a big toll on my daughter when we would have the very ill ones die. But not too sound too discouraging it is also very rewarding.

thats my thing... ill try to get ones that arent too to sick... i just wanna be able to save something... ill be doing the same thing when it comes to dogs...

i would perfer the animals that the owner just couldnt care for it any longer.... but hey.. ill still keep my ears open to see if i can see anything.. thanks alot

I find taking in unwanted iguanas very satisfying. I usually go for the mean, unhandleable ones. They seem to know this is their last chance as I have not had any problems yet. I currently have 7of the green monsters. Three free roam at the present and the others share their out time. Yes, I have been given some very sick ones, some I have saved,others I have had to put down. It is very sad when that has to be done but I find comfort in knowing that its last days were comfortable and happy. I have rescued some snakes, a monitor and several taratulas and love them all.As for disease and paracities, I have bought animals from reputable breeders and that is also no guarentee that they are healthy. Go with your heart is all I can say,

rescuing reptiles is very satisfying, altho as terri has stated, it is hard when some don't make it. personally, i have rescued many animals and i am very glad that there are others out there willing to do it as well. since you do not have much experience, i would suggest that you start with animals who do not have very difficult health problems, and then work your way up. a great way to get into rescue and adoption is through your local herpatological society. do a web search to find one near you.

It also seems that alot of the people who want to do reptile rescues are either looking for a free pet, don't have the financial means to care for these sick animals, or don't have th experience to care for the animal any better than it's previous owner. "I'll try to get ones that aren't too sick" makes me think that you fall into one of the above-mentioned categories. If that's not the case and I am totally off-base, I wish you the best of luck.

Rescuing herps is a really noble idea, most of the time. A friend just recently asked me to sell some of her herps for her as she could not take care of them anymore, and I agreed. I figured she might as well drop them off at my house so I could take better care of them while she was busy and I tried to find someone who wished to buy them. However, when I got them they were emaciated. It was a headache I was not prepared for, as if getting them back to a weight where they weren't on deaths door wasn't difficult enough, I even lost one, which can be discouraging to anyone keeping or rescuing herps. Rescuing sick herps is now something I know I wouldn't be ready to do or further pursue in any sense right now, personally.

I can only imagine that most animals a rescue would take in would be in need of much time, care, and even vet care or medication which can fetch a high price. If you have the means to do so, all the luck to you :)

ya your totally off base.... i do have the funds to purchase and care for these animals, and i thrive on giving any animal the best home that i possibley can... its just alot of ppl rescue dogs and cats and in the future when i plan on getting my own animals( ie. dogs) i plan on rescueing.... what i ment by "I'll try to get ones that aren't too sick" is for me to start..... i know it would be hard to care for a sick animal so ill start off small and work my way up.. i dont wanna jump in head first...

i also do alot of reasearch on animals first to know what im getting into..... i did about 6 mnths of reasearch for my cham. and anouther 2 mnths building my cham cage... so if i dont know an animal first hand i do alot of reasearch... hope this makes you see that im not someone looking for a free pet.... why should dogs and cats get treated better than herps...

My rescues just sort of happened. I didn't go overboard because my main collection was my priority but it wasn't long before my rescues became part of the family.
The always room for one more mentality can bite you on the a** though so its' best I think to do the "rescue thing" as it comes along rather than putting your name out there and risk getting flooded by requests to take over someone else's responsibility.
