View Full Version : Breeding amazons
Hi! I have a qestion regarding the breeding of amazon tree boas.
Is it best to house pairs together year round or should they be separated outside breeding season?
Thanx/Daniel
I would never house two snakes together.. esp during feeding time...
Seen two snakes end up grabbing opposing ends of a food item, both start swallowing, and one snake actually swallowing the head of the other snake... of course minus mating season :D

I am told if you just put the amazons together they will breed, we plan on doing so, if that male would start eating again!

Mine were housed together all summer and into the winter. I speperated them after she ovulated.

I also understand that when kept together, eventually they will breed if kept under the right conditions ofcourse :)
One of my females is starting to swell up now, so I can only hope.. ;)
If anyone has any pics of gravid females, I'd love seeing them, for comparison :)
Thanks /Quensel
Thank you guys for answering.
I guess it can be done both ways....
......I would not feed them while both of the snakes still where in the enclosure....I guess it would be quite a handfull :)
We have housed 6-7 amazons together (lg tank in store) at one time we would have them up to a year and were not in demand i may add.... Have had people come back with the offspring (unaware we sold a pregnant snake) to buy back for more then we sold the female! lol... we have had some litters while we try move them as well and have had good results without seperating them at all. as for the feeding we have rubbermaids that we put them individualy in at that time (feeding) same as ball pythons when we have many of them we house many together and at feeding time we usualy put them in a paper bag with the pinky and as they get bigger use the rubbermaids. bigest fatality is feeding snakes together or with cedar shavings in the tank (autopsy results) so as trevor says can go both ways but for faster results seperate them and before you reintroduce them put there sheds in with one another first as they will get use to the scent being there

I always removed the male while feeding.

You fed ur snakes on cedar before?
Thanks,
Ben
No never but we have sold some amazons in the past to come back the same day or within the same week dead with people wanting there money back not just amazons but alot of snakes have come back with shavings in the stomach or digestive system and is actualy common mistakes made among beginners sorry if you misunderstood me or if i came across wrong
The question was do you house them together for breeding or all the time... we have done it both ways just it's harder to remove a few amazons during feeding time then as to feed them in there individual enclosures we did it more for display and our benifit instead of running to the basement to bring many atb's up. But it is a pain to remove them during feeding if you clean your setup once a week as you would have to remove them anyways right? :) i find no problem if you keep it at 2-3 and have a few heat sources as they may even fight over that. but try keep it simple to start and introduce sheds from each other first so they know there is another snake present
