Recently i have been hearing about a illness that will break out shortly and wipe out millions. Then on television i see a comercial on Fox network on a movie based on true facts on SmallPox. About how something like this will happen, an finally today on AOL i see a link to cnn on there bulletin about a plague called Bird Flu over east in asia i believe. About how it will eventually spread all over. This has all come to my attention in the past 3-4 days. Anyone know about this, to me this sounds crazy. Heres a link to the AOL/CNN artical, http://cnn.aimtoday.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0002/20041126/0725805808.htm&photoid=20041022BAN05D

The bird Flu thing pops up in the news every once in a while for the past couple years. China has a real problem with it. It usually starts with Chickens. That's about all I know.

I've seen a few reports on CNN about how the WHO (world health organization) is worried about one of the avian flu strains jumping the species barrier to humans and starting the next big flu pandemic...
Historically we're overdue for one actually. They're supposed to happen every 50 years or so and the last one was in 1911 or something like that.

Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype! Hype!
I'm not scared. There's too many people around anyways.

CamHana, there are too many people on the world, in my opinion, that is what is causing most of all the worlds big problems, too many people. A flu that wipes out 50% of the people might actually save the world.
Come on killer flu!

Which 50% would you like to get rid of? Your wife but not you? Your mom and wife but not you or your nosy neighbour? How about we get rid of both mom and wife, but leave the neighbour and Osama? That's 50% of 4 people, should work to clean up the gene pool and save the world according to you.
Let's face it, 50% of the population, 30%, or even just 1 person,... they're all near and dear to someone. Just randomly saying it will save the world to wipe them out isn't accurate. You'd have to have the flu wipe out the nasty ones, the ones who don't do anything to improve the race and the world. Some selective flu cooties there if they manage to do that.
Pandemics and epidemics don't clear out the gene pool, they don't improve anything. If you want to improve things you have to work at it, get people to see the advantages of co-operation and hard work towards that goal. All we'll get from any pandemic is knowledge of the virus that caused it, maybe a few new medicines, but definitely a lot more suffering and crowded cemeteries, none of which will go any distance to saving the world or human race.

Just more media Hype as far as I'm concerned.
SARS was supposed to kill us all, really not that huge a deal, sure there were quite a few deaths but nothing to the epidemac proportion that the media was hypeing it too be.
West Nile Virus, again not a huge deal.
Media loves to sensatonalize(sp?) anything and everything, it doesn't get raitings to talk about the Virus that will get you really sick and may kill the very young or very old. It gets ratings because they go on TV and go "THERES ANOTHER HUGE EPIDEMIC COMING BETTER GO LIVE IN A BUBBLE OR YOU WILL DIE!" and then people get paniced and start threads like this :)

I agree I don't want to see anyone die, except if there is no choice. I hope there is a "cure" but people stop having more than 1 or 2 child's.

Sorry Ryan but I have to disagree with you on that one too. The black plague took a huge toll, but in retrospect didn't have much effect. Just look where we are today for proof of that. The only way to save the world from the human race is to wipe us all out. Which without a doubt will happen some day.

For me I am more curious about where the damned flus and viruses came from. Mankind has worked closely with animals including birds for most of our history. Why so many outbreaks of diseases that are next to impossible to treat. Granted containment is usually effective once they are better understood.
I think that the causes are man made. There has been biological weapon research all over the globe. It is not inconceivable that an airborne virus could break containment. Call me paranoid if you like but unless you can prove to me that this hasn't ever occured, I will still consider the possiblilty that it has.
These viruses are usually traced to countries who don't have the proper facilities or don't bother to follow containment procedures all that closely. Believe whatever helps you to sleep at night but I am not going to fluff the whole thing off as science fiction. After all the threat of these outbreaks is very real.

ANYthing, as far as I'm concerned, from the Fox network is absolute hype--they thrive on that kind of crappola.
just my opinion.

How did Marilyn Mason put it in Fahrenheight 9/11, "Keep them scared and you'll keep them consuming." It was him or a politician. Or maybe it was the politician who said keep them scared and they'll do anything or believe anything. What the quote was and who ever said it they were right. Keep the public scared and you can sell them anything you want. Have we learned nothing from Y2K?
Trevor
I agree with Trevor. It's things like this, the media pushing stories, blowing things up, that puts people into a panic.
I had to stop watching world news. Really. I had to stop. I was getting sick by the way the media put things, told stories, left other things out. It is wrong and someone needs to stop it.

I agree that Fox is full of ummmm hype but the core of the story is very real. If you need to rationalize it all by thinking of it as nothing but a **** and bull story then fine Ignoring world events does not stop it from happening.
Misinformation is the mode of operation today. Overhype something then show that it is not so bad then people think they have been duped and react less the next time a story comes out.
It is controlled media plain and simple. It cushions us and makes us think what "they" want us to think. In a word *propoganda*, it is real and it is intentional. Question everything and then think for yourself. And just because the majority has a different opinion , it doesn't mean that you are wrong and they are right.

I personally hate the news more then anything on earth. I also HATE HATE HATE cnn more specifically. They have managed to get millions of people to sit around the tv and listen to them as if they're a god

I don't mind CBC news or the BBC but FOX and CNN, forget about it. All they ever do is report about new ways I might die. Who wants to listen to that?

What happens, happens. No sence in worrying until it does, although thats all i seem to do. Sad part is, is the wealthy and rich will make it on top, they can afford the vaccines, the poor suffer. Being a religous person, my mind is set on whatever happens is gods will, but worrying is something we all do.

well ever since 9 11 the us government has controlled the population with the threat of more terror attacks
we here in canada are just as likely to be attacked but we are not kept in check with we are at level red or orange every other day
are eurpeons kept in check with threats of terror as well ? i dont know but the fear mongering that the news people love to do is a joke.
when i hear about a case of mad cow or west nile am i gonna freak out and not eat beef or if i get a mosquito bite am i gonna run to the dr ? I dont think so

Mankind has tampered with biological weapons and split the atom. I am not sure how god figures into this as far as it being his will anymore.
WE are quite capable of creating disasters on our own now. A lot of the scenarios makes biblical plagues look like the common cold. I don't think that god has a lot to do with it these days.

This is starting to get religouse and political, you know what that means. If we start down that road this thread will be closed. Not that it shouldn't already because I think it has lone since served it's purpose.

It has pretty much run it's course. I agree Trevor that it is getting both political and religious. Hard to keep those topics out of an issue like this one.
Maybe we should thank the mods for being patient since this thread went over the line a couple times. This is not a light topic and I am even more surprised that it has been so quiet.

Well I tink it's more quite cause people can come to accept the fact that not everyone has the same opinion, and that you can't push yours in someone else's head.
They don't need closing everytime. :D Just tone it down or it will be eventually.
Now, if you want to talk about how scared you are of chicken flu, be my guest. :D :D

I never get flu shots, because I beleive, some day - it will be the shot that starts the flu. They haven't picked the right flu yet in many years either - it is all a big conspiracy in my eyes.
The 50% of the worlds population comment earlier, wasn't meant be offensive - It just was based on how the largest worlds problems are because it is overpopulated by humans. Energy crisis, peak oil, future collapse of the economy, deforestation, hunger, aids - a lot can be blamed on global overpopulation - and the big pig that is North America (energy usage).
